Visitors to Newcastle for the netball State Age Championships at the weekend were happy to part with their money at restaurants and hotels.
But some were not so happy to be stung for parking infringements.
At least 53 fines, totalling $6864 were issued at the weekend and yesterday around National Park for offences including parking in no parking zones, on grassed reserves, in bus zones and on footpaths.
More than 3500 players came to the region with family and team staff, injecting hundreds of thousands of dollars but parking fines around the Newcastle venue gave council coffers a lift.
Newcastle City Council compliance service manager Adam Gilligan said fines were a deterrent to parking practices that posed risks to people’s safety.
‘‘When there are a large number of people in the area then these kinds of problems cause a real risk,’’ he said.
‘‘We put in place a number of measures to allow people to park close to the event safely and legally.’’
The event wound up yesterday and Newcastle Netball Association president Dell Saunders said feedback was resoundingly positive.
