New curator for Newcastle Art Gallery

New curator for Newcastle Art Gallery

10 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
NEWCASTLE Art Gallery has appointed its first curator in more than seven years.

Sarah Johnson, who has moved back to Newcastle from the Manly Art Galley and Museum, began at the city gallery on Wednesday.

It was an exciting return for the Newcastle university graduate, whose first job was working at the former Newcastle Museum in Hunter Street. She then spent 15 years in Sydney.

‘‘There’s such an amazing creative underbelly in Newcastle – musically and artistically,’’ Ms Johnson said.

Mrs Johnson has arrived in time for the $21million redevelopment and expansion of the Newcastle Art Gallery, due to begin by the end of the year.

‘‘It’s a really exciting period of change for the gallery,’’ she said.

‘‘It has one of the most significant collections in the country,’’ Ms Johnson added.

Newcastle City Council has called for detailed design tenders with most of the construction expected to take place in 2013.

The new gallery will have increased exhibition space, a studio for the artist-in-residence, new entrance and reception area, a 120-seat theatre, a 120-seat cafe, shop and two retail spaces.

Part of Mrs Johnson’s role as curator will include recommending new works to purchase, overseeing the moving and storage of art during renovations and organising and writing about exhibitions.

‘‘It was a real anomaly to have a collection as important as ours and not have a curator,’’ gallery director Ron Ramsey said.

The gallery’s former curator was Katrina Rumley.

I do not recall the ratepayers or community ever been involved in this decision.

I hope it will be 100% self funded and 100% self maintained.

$21 million upgrade!! Meanwhile it costs $4.60 for a 3yr old to go for a swim at the local pool plus the cost of a swimming lesson on top of that AND the cost for the accompanying parent. We live on the coast. The ability to swim is FUNDAMENTAL to our lifestyle. Why are we throwing millions at a gallery upgrade for the benefit of an exclusive few to gaze at pictures in their spare time for free whilst our children continue to drown? Surely a bit of "cultcha" is secondary to the health and wellbeing of our community? Free admission to pools thanks Council, you can clearly afford it!!!

@bigfeller..we can only hope that it is self funding, but alas I bet it will not be.

The more art galleries we have, the more curators we need, the more the long suffering rate and taxpayers are slugged. I guess the ambience provided by art galleries make them a great place to sip on chardonnay and nibble on King Island cheese.

They might have to put public pool admission up to pay for the curator. Who knows they might throw a re opening party and call it a public holiday yet
