New Marketown shopping centre opens

01 Jul, 2011 12:00 AM
Shoppers have flocked to the expanded Marketown Shopping Centre in Newcastle West, which opened its doors for the first time yesterday.

The $55 million development has been under construction for months.

Stores in the centre include a Woolworths supermarket, Big W, Dick Smith’s Electronics, Dan Murphy’s and 30 specialty stores.

A three-level underground car park will bring the centre's capacity to 600 parking spaces.

The new building is to the east of the existing Marketown shopping centre and car park.

Shopper Erin Miller said Newcastle was in need of the development.

"There were a lot of people inside and it was really quite busy," Ms Miller said.

"I thought it was really good."

Jeff Gladden from Craig Cook’s Prime Quality Meats said business had been booming.

‘‘[Things have been going] really well, we’re very happy with it,’’ Mr Gladden said.

A very big welcome to "Uncle Dan Murphy's". Hopefully the only recurring flood problems in that area will be of happy shoppers. Now, what about the CBD?

Oops, I thought the inner city was dying. Maybe it was just some loud mouths who can't look beyond Hunter Street.

The centre is beyond daggy and looks like it was decorated 15years ago. Then the carpark leads you straight back out to the exit on Steel St instead of up/down floors!

Gosh the decorations are fine, get over it. If it was all fancy then people would complain that it was a waste of money - which it would be. Its Marketown, not the crown plaza.

I havent yet experienced the car park so I can't really comment on that, but as long as movement between your vehicle and the entry is safe, again, get over it.

The stores are all great, this is a great addition to the west!

Was this shopping centre allowed to open without Building, Council and fire regulation approval? Is it safer to frequent this Centre than a Newcastle pub?
