NEW VIDEO: Civic Hotel fire causes chaos in Newcastle CBD

02 Jul, 2009 04:55 PM
NEWCASTLE City Council will await detailed inspections of the damaged Civic Hotel before deciding the "best course of action".

Fire experts have been called in to investigate the cause of the blaze which ripped through sections of the hotel, which fronts Hunter and Auckland streets, last night.

It is believed the fire began in a upper storey of the building, possibly by squatters.

VIDEO: The Civic Hotel was ablaze on Wdnesday night.

Patrolling police saw smoke billowing out of the Hunter Street building after 11pm and called fire crews.

About 30 international students were evacuated from nearby University House.

It took nearly four hours to extinguish the blaze.

It is believed the fire began in a one of the two disused floors above the ground floor hotel, possibly by squatters.

The fire damaged the two top storeys while the bar area suffered some damage.

The pub had been shut about 10pm last night.

Hunter and King streets were shut for several hours this morning as fire crews fought the blaze.

Fire crews will remain on the scene today to take care of possible spot fires.

The building is owned by Newcastle City Council.

A council spokeswoman said the site had now been handed back to council and a preliminary assessment of the damage had been completed.

"There is a possibility of roof sheeting being dislodged if forecasted strong winds eventuate," she said in a statement.

"As a precaution the adjoining vacate site to the East has been cordoned off."

The spokeswoman said insurance assessors would undertake a detailed assessment of the damage.

Detailed structural and technical inspections of the building should be completed by the end of next week.T he council would then determine "the best course of action".

I was expecting a slower crumbling of Newcastle, but this serves the same purpose. The council could organise this every week, as a tourist attraction. It also means less accommodation for squatters in this ghost town, and less passengers on the ghost train.

Jim, I like your comment. Newcastle is the slum area between Lake Macquarie and Port Stevens.

Interesting to see that this building is owned by NCC. What odds there is silence from city hall regarding whether the owners allowed access for vagrants to squat within this inner-city building!

So will this become another derelict building on Hunter Street ? I bet NCC won't bother to do anything about repairing or demilishing it for at least 30 years. Am I correct Newcastle ? NCC has a lot to answer for in this town. Blaming the building owners is wearing a bit thin. It seems NCC doesn't give a stuff that Newcastle CBD looks like a derelict hell hole.

To Micah: Do you want your rates (if you pay any) to help fund the repair or demolition of this building, that is if the Council has the legal right to do so? Many more urgent things come before this.

Speaking of Newcastle Council, could someone from the pathetic council get the 2 council witches hats that are stuck up on a ledge on the ex beautiful post office. Also the weeds growing around the outside of it are becoming a joke as well. I work in the CBD and i sick of having to apologise on behalf the crap , lazy council. A few colourful street light banners along hunter king and darby street wouldnt go astray either.DO SOMETHING NOW!!!!!!!

Ironically this is the best thing that can happen to old buildings in inner Newcastle. Bulldoze the ruins and make it parkland. A win/win situation for everyone.

Well in this case I believe that NCC owns the building. I think it should be knocked down and cleaned up within a few days. Remember the Park View hotel in Islington (and many other buildings) was gone almost before the ground had stopped shaking after the earthquake.

Another Newcastle icon.....I mean "eyesore"!!!!! I can't believe how much Newcastle (Hunter St imparticuar) has deteriorated. I feel embarrassed every time I go back to Newcastle - Get rid of the old guard on council. Time for young progressive councillors with a vision.
