Newcastle celebrates St Patrick's Day

18 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
NEWCASTLE'S St Patrick's Day revellers ranged from the very young to the young-at-heart.

Little Ciara Boyle, 4, from New Lambton, joined her dad Brendan yesterday for a game of hurling at Lambton Park.

Ciara had a broken arm from falling off play equipment but was still keen to take part in the traditional Irish game.

Her family is from the Irish county of Tipperary and moved to Australia in 2003.

Meanwhile 79-year-old Peter Francis Grew was enjoying a pint of Guinness on behalf of his heritage.

He is originally from Whiteabbey in Northern Ireland but has spent the past 60 years at Speers Point.

I hope Peter Grew gets an apology from the English government for the oppression against Ireland in the 1920s. Mr Grew's heritage demands it and so we can all move forward as a people. Perhaps some kind of non-tokenistic ceremony could be regularly arranged - and school children be taught of the issues?

I honestly dont see what all the fuss is about? Its about as relevant to te majority of aussies as valentines day (that stupid american waste of time) why dont we embrace St Vilislavs day in support of our balkan brothers? or St Marklars day for our friends from Mars? Irrelevant rubbish!

Cho look up the Irish and their history in Australia and you'll get your answer that it's very relevent. I'd love to celebrate St Marklars day. Cricket I agree but fat chance that would happen. Begosh and begorragh, every Irish son and daughter every good old Irish name and their relation!
