Newcastle mosque concerns

06 Sep, 2010 05:00 AM
Two Newcastle City councillors asked for an extension of the exhibition period for a development application to build a mosque in Elermore Vale so residents could submit their concerns.

About 100 residents raised their concerns to councillors Bob Cook and Mike Jackson in what was an emotional, and at times "volatile", meeting on Saturday.

"I think in the end it was a worthwhile meeting," Cr Cook said. "We have asked management to extend the exhibition period but if they don't then we will take it to council."

The development plans were to be on public exhibition until Wednesday but the councillors asked management to extend that by a month.

The $6 million development includes the mosque, a house, a funeral building, a two-storey car park for 165 cars and a community hall on a 8300-square-metre block opposite the Elermore Vale Shopping Centre on Croudace Road.

Shaft Tavern owner Geoff Byrne said a committee was formed to lodge the submission to council and would employ a town planner to critique the proposal as well as a traffic engineer.

"Traffic is the major concern but there are also a lot of people who are concerned their suburb, in the next 10 to 15 years, will change dramatically," he said. "The driveway [of the mosque] will be opposite the entrance to the shopping centre and it is a very busy thoroughfare."

Diane Rah of the Newcastle Muslim Association said the plans were the result of careful consideration of the impact on the community.

The Newcastle Herald's online poll on the mosque proposal drew an extraordinary response with about 85 per cent of nearly 2000 respondents supporting the move to build the mosque.

You bet the online poll drew an extraordinary response! I watched from 7pm till after midnight Saturday and counted the votes, which appeared at one stage to go in regularly at one minute intervals, always changing the percentage to favour the 'Yes' vote. Prior to this the 'No' vote was well in front. The Elermore Vale residents' meeting most certainly did not support these online results with residents showing valid concerns about the suitability of the site and the effects on their neighbourhood.

Only if the Muslim people live by Australian Law and customs. no changing our laws to suit them.

Having seen the footage of the "community" meeting on the TV news, many of those objecting are hiding their real, unfounded reasons for objecting behind traffic concerns. What do they really think could happen to their suburb? No, I don't live in Elemore Vale but would have no problems with a mosque being built in my street. And I have lived in a Muslim city, near mosques, and I am still OK. This is simply a case of NIMBY syndrome combined with small mind syndrome.

We need a referendum on the Islamic Question to re-establish our culture. These people don't come in peace they come with clear intentions of creating an Islamic state of Australia

in our attempts to become politically correct we have become overly keen to do the seemingly right thing by those claiming to have been discriminated against by allowing them what we would not normally allow. and on the other hand many minority groups are quite happy to play the discrimination card in an attempt to get what would normally not be allowed. bizarre.

I'm hopeful any concerns raised by the local community are based on legitimate environmental concerns, and not blind racism or prejudice?

Building of the mosque will not be a hindrance to the public.

I've no gripe against a mosque but the Elermore Vale proposal is reasonably close to Wallsend where there is an existing mosque. Objectively, NCC staff ought to be able to assess a proposal based on numbers of Islamists and their location which could be retrieved from Census data. Unless we are talking about a different Islamist sect in which case I guess objective rules, as for Christians, no longer apply. A pity.

I live in the street in wallsend that the mosque is currently in and yes fridays are very busy with lots of traffic, but I can honestly say that the other days are really no different to any other business. (except for ramadan) I have lived here for 10 years now and you do become immune to it, I have never seen any violence or bad behavior, the worse Ive had is talking outside my bedroom window late at night whilst the church goers are getting into their cars, but a quick 'move on please' from my hubby fixes that quick smart! They've even put bunnings vouchers in all the letterboxes in our streets at Christmas time to say sorry for the distraction on fridays.

Surely the Herald and people of Newcastle Council would be aware that most, if not all, of the YES votes were made by people who DO NOT even live in Newcastle or anywhere near Elermore Vale. Why doesn't the Herald take a telephone poll of all the residents who live in that area? Let's start being a bit more fair about this so-called poll.
