Newcastle Show holiday too costly: councillor

07 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
NEWCASTLE councillor Mike Jackson says making Newcastle Show Day a public holiday will cost both businesses and families, and described a push to revisit the issue tonight as ‘‘emotional scaremongering’’.

The council voted last year to request a ‘‘local event day’’ for show day, but Labor and Greens councillors have brought a rescission motion that will be debated tonight.

Lake Macquarie City Council has asked the NSW Government to approve a public holiday. A public holiday, as opposed to a local event day, entitles employees to penalty rates.

But Cr Jackson said yesterday the public holiday would have a greater financial impact on local families than a ‘‘local event day’’.

He said parents who worked in neighbouring council areas would have to work while their children were not be attending school.

Looks like LMCC is becoming indulgent. Wanting to slug ratepayers with higher rates and then wanting a public holiday for show holiday. It's time for some financial prudence. Show holiday is largely irrelevent to most people in Lake Macquarie except for public servants. Most people still have to go to work. Do us all a favour and become more efficent and streamlined.

No Show day No Show is that what the council wants.

What are they going on about? This holiday has already been gazetted by the current government last year.

Councillor Jackson is right. What does John Tate say?

I bet he votes with the Greens on this one!

It should be a normal day.

There is plenty of time to visit the show over the weekend.

Remember the main events are all on the weekend.

Has there been a survey to show how many attended as a result of the holiday? I bet bugger all.

Anyway if there is a day it should be publically advertised so all organisations could nominate.

A race day for the Melbourne cup would have far greater benefit.

It seems to me that all the NNC wants to do is increase land rates and create less working hours via suggested public holidays or what ever they want to call them. It just doesn't add up. No wonder they are in debt.

Well, if NCC fixed the CBD up and encouraged more people to visit the place over show days, the income from spending would offset the amount of extra wages. Who picked these people? There are 13 year old children that play Sim City that have better town planning skills.

Not everyone gets penalty rates. I understand the major retailers don't pay them because their business is not based in the area, so essentially the councils penalise local employers. They are anti small business thus also anti employment as they impost more expense. It is a relic of an old industrial agreement with outdoor workers, ratepayers pay twice (overtime and council wages & overtime for Sat garbage pickups) & three times if you go out and have a coffee. And we wonder why Newcastle doesn't get ahead. You don't see Sydney creating a show day for the Easter show.

5% of families may be affected, so it is bad for all families?

I remember not so long ago the show didn't even occur. I agree that it is less revelant these days and is silly for business to cop the extra cost when most people go to the show on the weekends.
