Newcastle's fourth coal-loader closer

22 Jun, 2011 04:00 AM
Newcastle Port Corporation has lodged a plan to amend harbour shipping channels and pave the way for the city's fourth coal-loader.

The application, placed on exhibition this week, states that the NSW government has "endorsed terms for the construction of a fourth coal terminal at the port should certain conditions be met".

The Newcastle Herald understands that amounts to an in-principle agreement to support the terminal, and that several options for the T4 loader are still being considered as part of the planning process.

The port corporation's application proposes increasing the size of the approved harbour swing basin, and moving it about 200 metres to the east, near the Ausgrid wind turbine.

"In support of the NSW Government's commitment to further development of export capacity within the port of Newcastle, [the port corporation] has made the decision to amend the location of the swing basin," the application says.

"These changes are required to facilitate further expansion of coal-loading facilities on Kooragang Island upstream of the swing basin."

The T4 loader, being planned by the Rio Tinto and Xstrata-backed Port Waratah Coal Services, could add 140 million tonnes a year to the Hunter's export coal capacity.

A project application for T4 has been lodged with the NSW Department of Planning.

The Herald reported in March that the Kooragang Island wind turbine could be removed to make way for the port expansion, and that Port Waratah Coal Services and Ausgrid were in discussions about the implication of the proposed swing basin.

A port corporation spokesman said yesterday the swing basin would enable vessels to sail to proposed berths.

What's the point of building a 4th coal loader, with a supposed capacity of 140 million tonnes a year, when the entire port can't even receive 140 million tonnes of coal a year due to the inadequate rail line? Smart move that!

MADNESS. The oceans are suffering so much stress from increasing acidity, from atmospheric pollutants, and mankind looks to the dollars and keeps on planning to burn more and more coal. Can we soil our nest and not suffer the consequences? No! Put the expenditure into plans for expansion of renewable energy.

Politics at the Pub was last night told that coal wharf usage was as low as 31% with actual loading far less than that.

Those present were asked why should new wharfs be built if the existing ones were not fully used.

Sounded reasonable to me.

So the useless new state government is going to thumb its nose at notions of AGW by going forward with the very silly idea. Why not build it on the Newcastle CBD site and satisfy the calls for a renewal. Two birds with the one stone. Congratulations to the human sheep who voted for Tim Owen!

why oh why do we need another coal loader? more coal, more dust, more trains, more profits for the big companies......................

what about we let them have the fourth loader if we, the people of the hunter, get all the profits from the sale of the extra coal, and than we can do some good with it. if we are the people who have to put up with the extraction and transportation of the coal, than should we not be able to spend some of the profits????

leave it in the ground for a rainy day. remember, its not going anywhere!

If you add another 140million tons per year you also add more congestion to roads and bridges in the area. There are NO air quality monitors that read fine dust particles - the ones that enter your lungs and cause serious health problems. There are no barriers to stop the dust from enveloping areas to the south when the nor-east breeze is blowing. The rail infrastructure is at capacity now unless the passenger line is taken away or severely cut. Who's doing the planning?

This City is being unfairly burdened by the coal industry juggernaut. A fourth loader with Tinkler interests pushing for a fifth and a current editorial in the Herald indicating the Chinese owned Shenhua mine at Gunnedah is also on the look out for export capacity. All this when it's clear coal burning is one of the main culprits in climate change and we are trying to introduce a carbon tax here. What a disgrace. Coal profits and interests before those of the residents of Newcastle. We can now proudly boast this City does more to damage the planet than any other.

Catherine Hill Bay should be the site of the next coal loader as it would blend in well with the historic aspects of this settlement. The locals would have a new wharf to admire as well as the smell of coal just like the original settlers did.

I am disappointed that we are so short sighted to limit capacity to 140MT. We should be dredging the harbour so it’s deeper than the Mariana Trench. Container and bulk vessels should be berthed up and down the Hunter River as far as the eye can see. Newcastle should be the Gateway for Australia’s eastern seaboard inbound and outbound freight. Sadly, this idea will be ruined by those who wish to see us all living in trees.

Rail capacity lacking? No problem, the government will just spend another billion dollars of taxpayers' money on infrastructure subsidising the profits of multinational miners (the same ones who object so vehemently to contributing to tax revenue). Meanwhile the public transport needs of half-a-million taxpaying Hunter residents will continue to languish in mediocrity, below any govt's radar.
