Next Honeysuckle site ready for investor

01 Jul, 2010 04:00 AM
ONE of the last non-waterfront lots in Honeysuckle will be available soon for development.

The NSW government is expected to call today for proposals for 3728 square metres of land next to Hunter Water's head office.

Minister for the Hunter Jodi McKay said the move would build on the recent expressions of interest for a new university precinct in Honeysuckle.

"This is an exciting opportunity for another major investment to be made in Honeysuckle precinct," Ms McKay said.

The site has been earmarked for a combination of residential, commercial and retail uses. The successful developer will also be required to turn the adjacent site into an open public park.

The land is east of where the Wickham transport interchange would go if the government decides to adopt that part of the Hunter Development Corporation report for rejuvenating Newcastle.

Ms McKay said a billboard advertising the call for proposals would be placed on the site this month and a local and national advertising campaign would be run.

"Development proposals must be lodged by August 30, 2010, and comply with the Hunter Development Corporation's call for proposals document," she said.

"Following the evaluation and negotiation phases, a selected development proposal would then be subject to the normal planning assessment process, including a public consultation phase."

The government aims to exchange contracts by December this year.

What do Newcastle people want;; derelict two storey buildings built back in the early 1900's or new efficient and sought after buildings of 21st century standards with on- site parking?. Such buildings attract modern businesses, not little scruffy shops. Bulldoze Hunter Street and start again, after clearing away the railway and leaving the rail area as a green corridor giving access to the waterfront and Honeysuckle. Have you walked along the foreshore in the last few days of glorious weather, especially last Sunday?

Last Sunday the foreshore was teeming with people and the "Mall' was almost empty. The quicker the Berlin Wall (railway) which is a barrier between the waterfront and Hunter/Scott Streets is removed and grassed over the better.

I say no new buildings for Honeysuckle untill all of Hunter St is full with vibrant new enterprises matched to the future.

actually Mac, "yes" i walked there on sunday just gone. My wife commented that the beauty of this area (aside from the natural beauty) is that you can go there knowing there is always going to be something to see or do. Build a terminus at wickham or civic and open the area up further and this will only improve this wonderful asset. New buildings are fine, though some of the older ones are magnificent around the east end. The contrast of new to old i think showcases the beauty of both. There are some appalling examples for new and old in town though. Crown Plaza is absolutely diabolical, and the David Maddison building on cnr king and watt sts is a monstrosity

actually..... newie7, i can't let it go. since when did getting a haircut alter ones ability to think more rationally? what has having or not having a hobby got to do with being able to conduct sensible arguments or discussions? and living in the foothills surrounding byron bay would not be terrible. so.... i still do not get any sense from your post.... apart from that maybe you think im a hippy greeny? im with spinner! more turf! and next time newie7, try adding something to the debate rather than just trying to dump on someone. you failed.
