No support for Singleton rail plan

24 Sep, 2010 04:00 AM
TWO of the region's mining giants, Xstrata Coal and BHP Billiton, declined to support a plan for additional passenger rail services to Singleton and the Upper Hunter.

The Two More Trains for Singleton group recently asked coal companies operating in the Upper Hunter to support its push for additional services between Newcastle and Singleton.

The companies were also asked to consider contributing financially to the provision of two new carriages.

Group spokeswoman Pauline Davoren said the group received negative responses from BHP Billiton and Xstrata, which said they were unable to provide any support.

"The lack of support is disappointing, considering the health, educational, environmental and social benefits that the community and mine employees and their families would gain from better accessibility to services," Ms Davoren said.

She said improved passenger rail services would provide an opportunity for coalmine employees to travel to work by public transport, rather than travelling the increasingly congested and dangerous new England Highway by car.

"Given the enormous public investment in rail infrastructure for the benefit of coal mining companies, it is regrettable that appropriate passenger services cannot be provided," Ms Davoren said.

She said the NSW government was continuing to investigate the provision of additional services between Singleton and Newcastle in conjunction with the forthcoming completion of the Lower Hunter Regional Transport Strategy.

As a regular user of the train to Singleton I would love 2 more trains a day to and from Singleton. Dungog has a far better train service than Singleton and the Upper Hunter. But I suppose the needs of the people cannot delay the mining companies' rape and pillage of the Valley's resources.

Another clear example of big coal producers taking from the wider community and not giving back. Everyone living along the corridor of New England Hwy & the rail line have put up with coal dust through out their houses the least they could expect is have public transport

Although it would be a good initiative and contribution by those private companies to improve public transport, why would the government expect private companies to directly and financialy contribute to government investments? It's the government's responsibility and duty to invest first, in order to attract private investment. Without the government investment on rail infrastructure, those companies would not have decided to invest in the Upper Hunter. We are surviving the same situation in Newcastle CBD. GPT had asked for the government to invest for light rail. Without the commitment of government for light rail, GPT has recently decided to withdraw its investment plans. Private investment would come to places where the government invests. Instead of asking money from those companies to improve public transport, increased mining tax could have been a solution to receive their money indirectly and to spend for railways. Improved train services would definitely reduce the traffic on roads and reduce traffic accidents while providing more convenient transportation means.

Given the number of cars on the roads there would be considerable patronage if the timetable matched the needs of travellers.

The above being the case, the next step would be for the coal companies as well as the rail operators to start covering up their loads and eliminate coal dust coming off their trains. Coal dust and the health of residents living near railway lines simply don't mix.

What more would you expect from the mine owners? They only worry about their profits.
