 'No' to offshore gas drilling

'No' to offshore gas drilling

20 Sep, 2010 04:00 AM
Opposition is building to an exploratory gas drilling project planned off Newcastle, with environment groups banding together to fight the project.

Activists met at a Hamilton hotel on Saturday to form a coalition against the plan.

There is concern the plan will damage marine ecosystems and beaches and hamper moves towards renewable energy.

Advent Energy, through its subsidiary company Asset Energy, plans to begin exploratory drilling this year for natural gas 27 kilometres to 55 kilometres off Newcastle.

Lake Macquarie councillor Phillipa Parsons, who called Saturday's meeting, created a Facebook page yesterday called Hands off Our Coast.

"The plan has huge potential to inflict damage to the marine environment and tourism and commercial industries such as fishing, cruise ships and whale-watching," Cr Parsons said.

There is concern that the drilling plan, which needs state and federal approval, lacks transparency and scrutiny.

The Newcastle Herald reported on Thursday that NSW Primary Industries Minister Steve Whan said Advent's environment plan for the proposal did not have to be made public under federal law.

Cr Parsons said it was "secret mining business they don't want people to know about".

Advent said extracting gas would be good for the environment because it produced less carbon dioxide emissions than coal.

Cr Parsons said governments were wrong to continue to pursue gas exploration and extraction because it was a fossil fuel.

"They are wasting precious time and opportunity to develop clean, renewable energy," she said.

Gas sure is better than coal BUT, if there was any accidents it would be a lot harder to do anything about it at sea, look at the recent trouble in the Gulf of Mexico. Not only that come and see the mess the drilling rigs are doing in the Gloucester area and it will be a bigger mess when they start producing gas.

They should have started their protests years ago, when the proposal first came to light. Bit too late, when it's in your "back yard" already!

they dont want coal mined, or gas harvested, lets all freeze to death in the dark, then they can complain our corpses produce to much methane. i'll take the guilt to the grave with me. p.s. i'm not in favour of all mining.

Cr. Parsons needs to do some research instead of embarking on a scare mongering campaign. Her views are only based on emotion which does not serve her constituents well. People like Cr. Parsons live in an idealogical world and whilst it would be really nice if we could live our lives with no risk., it is how we manage risk that counts. Take a tip counsellor. How about you spend your time and energy on the research and then you can make an informed opinion to your constituents. That is what you are paid for isn't it!!

I presume none of the people at the objectors meeting have gas connected to their house or use a BBQ...... or is it OK to drill for gas in someone else's back yard - as long as its delivered cheap and easy to your house it doesn't matter. Typical Newcastle NIMBY's

Too many activist groups for my liking. How about a few groups to ensure a better future, to ressurect Newcastle, not as a CBD but a tourist and residential mecca. How about a few groups to think in a positive and progressive manner. Just might form my own group, with me the only member.

Any one want to jump on a band wagon. Not too sure what we can protest about. Must be some thing Parson's and the Hill mob hasn't thought of.

I'm a proud Novocastrian and I want to see this town move forward But we have some loud-mouthed minorities who want to see Newcastle pushed back to the stone age. A large gas-find would be a huge benefit for Newcastle and NSW (NSW Labor must be hoping and praying). I hope proactive Australians have some shares in Bounty (BUY) or MEC (MMR). The negative Aussies can move to North Korea, which is a energy-free zone.
