 NSW Premier jeered in Newcastle

NSW Premier jeered in Newcastle

29 May, 2009 12:25 PM
NSW PREMIER Nathan Rees and senior ministers were jeered by interest groups and condemned in explosive comments from Milton Orkopoulos whistleblower Gillian Sneddon at a tense Hunter community meeting last night.

The meeting, billed as the Government's response following a cabinet visit to Newcastle last month, bordered on farce at times, as anti-Tillegra Dam protesters drowned out Mr Rees with their booing during what was supposed to be a question and answer session.

Mr Rees told the meeting, of about 200 people at the Glades Conference Centre at Warners Bay, that the Government had listened to their concerns about Cessnock Jail in deciding not to go ahead with its privatisation.

It had also acted on a promise to release the Hunter Development Corporation's City Centre renewal report, about which it would now seek public feedback.

Mr Rees said the Government would proceed with Tillegra Dam as it was needed to secure the region's water supply, to which protesters jeered.

But the most dramatic moment came when Ms Sneddon, a former Swansea electorate officer, asked Mr Rees why an inquiry had not been held into her treatment and whether disgraced Swansea MP Orkopoulos, who was found guilty of child sex and drug crimes, had been protected.

Ms Sneddon was sacked when Orkopoulos's replacement, Swansea MP Robert Coombs, declined to keep her on.

Mr Rees was Orkopoulos's former chief of staff but resigned before the disgraced MP was arrested, to take up a position with former premier Morris Iemma.

Hunter MPs and senior ministers watched on aghast as Ms Sneddon rattled off names of Labor politicians she claimed knew of allegations surrounding Orkopoulos.

"But you, you didn't know anything about it did you Nathan, because you scurried like a rat to premier Iemma's office because you didn't want to get tainted by the allegations," she said.

Mr Rees said he stood by his previous public statements on the matter, in which he has said he was not aware of Orkopoulos's conduct.

He urged Ms Sneddon to refer to the authorities any material she may have that suggested any wrongdoing.

"Give her a job," several members of the crowd yelled.

Mr Rees said he would discuss the matter with Parliamentary Speaker Richard Torbay.

Further furore erupted when Swansea MP Robert Coombs referred to Ms Sneddon as "a ratbag".

He initially denied the remark to The Herald but later retracted the denial, saying he was sorry but had been upset that Ms Sneddon had made comments about his staff.

Congratulations Gillian. If I had known you were coming I would have turned up to cheer you on. Nathan Rees was Orkopoulos chief of staff, so this raises a lot of questions about what he knew or didn't know about Orkopoulos criminal activity, which occurred over many years. There must be an inquiry into your treatment, as you acted in the public interest with honesty and integrity.

Swansea Labor MP Robert Coombs "ratbag" comments about Gillian Sneddon are outrageous, and he must resign immediately.

I would not worry too much about state labor as there time is numbered and even their own PM want talk to them. So who does support the State Labor party, only there Mums. There is no treat to Mr Rees being removed as Premier as no one wants a job that is going to ruin their career. The back lash could be greater than anyone predicts as by 2011 Mr Rudd will be pushing to have the GST raised to pay off the massive det that Australia is in do to all the Stimulus packages that have been handed out.

If Nathan Rees was unaware of Mr Orkopoulos's years of misconduct while working for him, his apparent ignorance and naivity certainly go a long way towards explaining why NSW is in such a mess.

Congratulations Gillian Sneddon if more people stood up for what was right we would live in a much better society. If Nathan Rees really had nothing to hide he would welcome an independent & open pubic inquiry.

Swansea MP Mr Robert Coombes, calls Ms Gillian Sneddon a ratbag! Ms Sneddon is the only dignified thing to come out of that outfit. This behaviour speaks volumes, regarding Mr Coombes's values, honestly, standards & loyalties. Ms Sneddon is a hero, who has been dumped she has a right to be angry, perhaps she hit a nerve saying Nathan "scurried like a rat"! But what did any of you really do apart distance yourselves & try to bury the whole Orkopolous affair. What would u rather "The old business as usual approach". Well its not business as usual for Ms Sneddon & it certainly won't ever be for the victims of Mr orkopolous!

The Herald forgot to mention the officers at Cessnock Jail who have been singled out during the campaign to save the jail and been suspended for false allegations. Even one officer having a heart attack when giving his letter of suspension.(Bullying and Harrasment at its very best) When is this government going to sack the commisioner. Mr Rees and the public believe NSW will see this story unfold on a national news on a TV in your homes. Stay tuned.

Well done Gillian Sneddon !! Sad thing in life is that you did the honest thing & reported criminal sexual activity of a grown adult on a child to which Orkopolous admitted to doing the crime. Gillian Sneddon it might be time to become a Independent Candidate in the next local Council Election as you will get a lot of votes for doing the right thing to which the Newcastle & Lake Macquarie public has commended you on about the uncovering of the Orkopolous affair. "KEEP THE BASTARDS HONEST" !!

I cannot recall a more detested government any where in Australia than this outfit. They are such an embarrasment I bet most of them could not even look at themselves in a mirror. Not even their heartland supporters support them any more. Enough said.
