 Peek inside new Honeysuckle nightspot

Peek inside new Honeysuckle nightspot

30 Jul, 2010 04:00 AM
THE next nightspot to open its doors in Newcastle is on track for October.

The Newcastle Herald has been given a sneak peek inside what will be the $14.5 million boutique Lee Wharf Hotel in Honeysuckle.

The bar will hold 800 people and open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Owners successfully transferred the former Empire Hotel's liquor licence to the premises in 2008.

The Herald reported recently that the Casino, Liquor and Gaming Control Authority rejected the transfer of the Jolly Roger liquor licence to the proposed Kensington nightclub because of complaints and opposition from police and the authority.

The situation has prompted Newcastle City councillor Aaron Buman to call for a "nightclub precinct" in Newcastle West.

He said that blocking the transfer was a bad idea because it meant the Jolly Roger, despite being closed, could still operate in its isolated location without restriction.

During transfers, authorities had a means of imposing modern restrictions, he said.

He said authorities should encourage transfers of licences including the old Star Hotel's to create a nightclub precinct at Honeysuckle.

"Then you can co-locate the police, security and taxis," Cr Buman said.

The Lee Wharf Hotel is a circa-1910 storage shed, and will include a boutique pub, restaurant, outdoor deck, public forecourt and 15 gaming machines.

Proponent Craig Laundy said it would add diversity to town and would be reminiscent of venues in Sydney's King Street Wharf.

"This will be an offering Newcastle hasn't seen before," he said.

"It's a hotel licence but it's going to be a bit more up-market."

Newcastle can not cope with another venue that will undoubtedly produce unacceptable levels of alcohol related violence! What are the developers who will be profiting from this venue going to give back to the community and particularly the residents who live near this venue?

What a great idea Aaron. Lets create a "nightclub precinct" in Honeysuckle where thousands of people live on top of each other. With ideas like that, you should be up for Mayor so the council could really run this city into ruins. Would the commercial areas of Hunter Street (like where the Kensington is) not make more sense as there is very little residents near there. I am not for the Kensington proceeding but it is a far more logical position for a noisy nightclub.

So honeysuckle can get all the bars it wants but think about putting one elsewhere and there is a sh*t storm?

Why does alcohol have to be such a focus in Newcastle? Its the people that do not drink excessively that have all the fun.

I'll enjoy a drink there. Well done. I'm looking forward to it. It certainly makes a lot of sense to have a nightclub precinct to concentrate resources. Honysuckle is ideal.

Good to see Buman talking some sense. Get the Kensignton off the ground too and stop listening to Tony Brown and his rocking-chair crusaders.

Aaron B you might be one of these people that want people at pubs. USING TAXI's etc. Makes more money for you. Lets get over all the other rubbish first. Make one at Carrington.Maybe you can build a bridge from Carrington to Honeysuckle development area.Come on party animal lol. I must say you are in the news for all the wrong things.

Ok... come on vocal minority killjoys - lets get this over with. Tell us why this is bad for the city, and why a derelict old building should have stayed a derelict old building, and those greedy developers are killing our city by God forbid turning derelict old buildings into useable and functional spaces. Come On... we are all waiting.
