Powderfinger farewells Newcastle in final concert

02 Sep, 2010 05:00 AM
AUSSIE rock band Powderfinger signalled the beginning of the end when their national farewell tour kicked off in Newcastle last night.

After more than 20 years together, the group, led by Bernard Fanning, are no strangers to a Newcastle crowd.

They cut their teeth as a premier rock act at the University of Newcastle’s Bar on The Hill and toured with the Hunter’s own Silverchair three years ago.

‘‘We love playing here,’’ Fanning said at last night’s farewell to Newcastle.

‘‘This is a celebration and there’s nothing sad about it.’’

More than 7000 people sang and cheered them on at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre.

The band opened the concert with Love Your Way and performed some of their greatest hits including These Days, and (Baby I’ve Got You) On My Mind.

The Sunsets Farewell Tour heads to the Gold Coast tomorrow before wrapping up in Powderfinger’s hometown of Brisbane on November 13.

The band arrived in Newcastle on Monday after a few weeks of rehearsing.

Awesome show lads! Much more exciting and entertaining than this story makes out. The stage swap mid-show took the crowd by surprise and was certainly a talking point afterwards. For the true fans, I hope you all loved it and sang your lungs out. For the old fogies who went just because it was their final show in Newcastle, I hope you feel sad that you've not been a fan for the past 17 years. Long live the 'Finger.

Brilliant night. Stage swap was a nice thing to do for the fans as the back row was suddenly the front row for a few songs. Crowd loved it and went off! Gonna be tough to see a show to beat it.

Awesome! i have seen these guys on a number of occasions over the past 15 years and would definitely say it was one of their best shows. Loved the fact they played a few songs at the back of the stadium for the fans.

Poderfinger are a great band but i found that last night was not their best performance. They were better at Homebake last year. Whether it was the stadium's acoustics or just being their first gig of the tour and removing the cobwebs, i must admit I have seen better. Why plug new stuff when it is a farewell concert. We want the old and good stuff. My opinion, they will do a John Farnham and make several comebacks. $15 a stubby holder? A bit rich.
