Protest at Charlestown over public housing projects in the Hunter

17 Nov, 2009 04:38 PM
ANGER is mounting over public housing projects planned in the Hunter, with about 70 people staging a protest in Charlestown today.

Residents fighting public housing plans at Charlestown, Teralba, Tighes Hill, Swansea, Tingira Heights and Throsby Creek attended.

Listen to Lake Macquarie City councillor Barry Johnston speak at the protest here.

Residents were angry that the NSW Government had allowed the department to bypass councils and "self-approve" public housing, under a federal plan to stimulate the economy.

Charlestown Residents Group spokesman Phillip Regent said residents' rights had been ignored.

"The department has bulldozed its way through the system and we're not going to put up with it," Mr Regent said.

Lake Macquarie City councillor Barry Johnston said the plan was an overdevelopment that had caused privacy concerns.

"It has complete disregard for council planning guidelines," Cr Johnston said.

"This is places for shelter, not for accommodation."

Department of Housing Northern NSW general

manager Pauline McKenzie urged residents to submit concerns to the department within the 21-day exhibition period, which ends in five days.

"We take into account concerns," she said.

Barry Johnston has a short memory. Does he not remember he was the one who gave the green light to move Ferris Oval and in turn have Charlestown Square take up a massive amount of open space. And he calls this bulldozing!! what a hypocrite!!!

Perhaps the residents would be happy if these people were sent to Christmas Island ... .

I just watched NBN news and seen the reaction of the residents fighting not to have a housing development built on the site. How dare you people say no to a block of units. There are people living on the streets and in urgent need of a roof over their heads. Have you no consideration for them at all? Obviously not. What if those units are for elderly people that have been on the waiting list for 10 years? Have you ever thought of that? Again, I guess not. It's people like you that gives Newcastle the reputation of being one of the most selfish greedy towns on the eastern seaboard. Wake up to yourselves and spare a thought for the homeless. What if it was your mum or dad or another family member in need of housing? I bet you wouldn't be crying foul then. For people who are meant to be mature responsible adults you sure as hell carried on like spiteful playground kiddies. Amen none of you are running the country, we'd be in more trouble than we're already in.

More questions need to be asked regarding the National Rental Affordability Scheme and its tender processes. I suggest we should also be asking questions about the companies who have been awarded these contracts.

My god i've seen heartless people in my time and i've seen some real nasty ones too but you lot that I just saw on the local evening news makes some public housing tenants look like saints. Talk about getting up in the face of someone and shouting words with no substance. If you spoke to me like that I'd be inclined to tell you to come and speak to me when you can be civil because you lot were far from civilised. There is an ever growing demand for housing in case you haven't noticed. Homeless people with nothing but the shirts on their backs but you don't seem to care about that because you're too selfish to give a damn. Say for example your grandparents or your own children needed somewhere to live, would you not want them off the streets and out of shelters and placed into adequate housing? It's okay for people who have a nicely heated home in winter and cooled house in summer like yourselves but don't you think there are less fortunate people out there who'd like the same? Everyone deserves to get the benefit of the doubt no matter who or what they are. You basically judged housing tenants and you deserve neighbours from hell. I don't know how you sleep at night in your comfy home

Let's build, build and build... it gives those whom life has not treated well a good place to live and plenty of jobs for people.

It is not a privacy issue. These residents just don't want to live around the people who use public housing. Just be honest.

DEN ISLES HOW ABOUT THE DEVELOPMENT BE BUILT NEXT DOOR TO WHERE YOU LIVE. SWANSEA ALREADY HAS ONE HOUSING NEW SOUTH WALES EXPERIMENT GONE WRONG. NOW THEY ARE ENDEAVOURING TO REPEAT THAT MISTAKE. WHEN SPENDING TAX PAYERS MONEY HIDDEN UNDER THE GUISE OF A STIMULUS PACKAGE ANYTHING GOES. ROBERT COOMBS DOES NOT SUPPORT RESIDENTS OF SWANSEA ON THIS ONE. HANDS UP THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO CONTEST ROBERT'S SEAT OF SWANSEA. I DON'T THINK HE WILL BE THE MEMBER AFTER THE NEXT ELECTION. SWANSEA RESIDENTS INTEND TO VOTE WITH THEIR FEET.

How about Barry Johnson denounce the immigration policy of the Kevin07 Labor government? Where does he think 200,000 immigrants every year are housed? What about the battlers that are pushed out onto the streets? Forget about the boat people, we have people in need here.
