Push is on for uniform hotel trading hours in Lower Hunter

23 Jan, 2010 04:00 AM
LOWER Hunter hotels are a step closer to having uniform trading hours after two councillors this week pushed for earlier closing times.

Cessnock councillor Chris Parker and Maitland councillor Ray Fairweather have raised questions at council meetings this week about the feasibility of uniform operating hours for hotels in their local government areas.

Cr Parker was to address a council meeting on Wednesday night but withdrew his question after he received an overwhelming response from hoteliers, residents and police in Cessnock after he aired his concerns in The Herald.

"I was not aware that the key stakeholders are already working together in a bid to combat antisocial problems in Cessnock later at night," Cr Parker said.

"Hotels in Cessnock are already doing their best to raise their image and curtail bad behaviour.

"The problem seems to be youth but it is still alcohol-related, but I have learned they are not buying it directly from hotels," Cr Parker said.

He said some hotels in the city had a licence to stay open until 3am but closed at midnight.

At a Maitland City Council meeting this week Cr Ray Fairweather asked if was possible for all inner-city hotels to close at 11pm.

"The reason I asked the question is because everyone is reading about these serious assaults taking place in Maitland and I think the city is getting a bad reputation because of it," Cr Fairweather said.

He said that if hotels stayed open later than 11pm they should contribute to security measures for the mall and other areas of central Maitland.

Close them all at 10 pm like they used to do it was always sufficent when I was younger or are the young ones of today just better drinkers than us older ones who manages when pubs closed at 10 and clubs 12. My own kids and their mates drink at home until 9 o'clock or so then go out to the pubs when they should coming home.

As I have said in the past there should be cncerned effort to close the Hotels at 10 pm clubs at 11 pm if they the liquor industry can not make money out of those hours then they should not in the game at all. Police, Councils and the Liquor Licencing Board should be loud views for these hours.

Locals will just go to Sydney or the Central coast to spend their money.

In reply to Jethro.. and fight in the streets, damage property, kill one another. wake peaceful neighbourhoods. It will not be long before Sydney and the Central Coast start closing their booze outlets early as well.

Politicians are going to start losing their seats over the booze and violence and vandalism. People are fed up with subsidising the liquor industry by cleaning up the mess after. Newcastle Councils has an annual vandalism bill of 1 million dollars. Their cleaning costs they wont say.

I agree with Bronson. 10pm pubs and 11pm clubs to cease alcohol sales.

GeorgeJ, Drunks roaming the streets full of booze at three and four oclock in the morning don't cause mayhem and vandalism. Do they?. We, the older generation, as youngsters could go out at a resonable hour have a great time and still get home without to much bother to anyone. Just what has changed over fourty years.
