Donna Crooks thought it odd when someone paid for her petrol, but it’s the sort of thing Novocastrians can expect today.
Organisers of the second Random Acts of Kindness Day want people to surprise their friends, neighbours and colleagues with good deeds, at least for today.
Mrs Crooks, of Kotara South, was about to fill up her four-wheel-drive at a Merewether service station.
She was a bit puzzled when she was beaten to it by volunteer Clare Rooney yesterday in a foretaste of Random Acts of Kindness Day.
‘‘I’ve never heard of the day before, but if you can do something nice for someone I guess it makes you feel good too,’’ Mrs Crooks said.
She nominated paying for her sister’s interstate flight today as her act of kindness.
Ms Rooney said residents were slowly becoming aware of the day, and the official website displayed posts from locals detailing their plans.
They included mowing lawns and topping up parking metres.
‘‘We’re just hoping it gets some momentum,’’ Ms Rooney said.
The concept was started by Church 180, but its website says it has ‘‘no hidden agendas or beliefs/ideas to push’’.
