NEWCASTLE has a proud and distinguished rugby league history, from the first match played in front of a few spectators, to grand final glory, the pinnacle of the modern game.
Milestones marking the region's place in a century of sporting competition are featured in an exhibition opening today at Newcastle Region Library's Lovett Gallery.
Local studies librarian Sue Ryan said items on display, including photos, jerseys, Test caps, boots, programs, tickets, balls, trophies, honour rolls, flags, hats and badges, were sourced from library, football club and private collections.
Many milestones are chronicled, from Newcastle's 1908 entry to the Sydney Rugby League and the formation of our own local rugby league competition two years later, to the Knights' grand final victories in 1997 and 2001.
Among teams represented in the displays are Central Newcastle, Western Suburbs, the Pumpkin Pickers and Lakes United.
Local heroes profiled include Ron Roberts, who scored the try that won a 1950s Australian team, captained by Clive Churchill, the Ashes from Great Britain; and retired Knights star Andrew "Joey" Johns, who many consider the world's greatest player of the modern game.
