Renew Newcastle a singular success in mall

18 Dec, 2010 12:00 AM
RENEW Newcastle's success can be measured by the fact that only one of its projects still exists in the revitalised Hunter Street Mall.

The mall was in ruin two years ago, when Renew Newcastle revived it by filling more than 20 empty shop spaces that now have long-term tenants.

The idea was to revive empty sites by making them available to artists, cultural projects and community groups on a 30-day agreement with reduced rent, in a bid to lure people back into the CBD.

And it worked, despite the uncertainty surrounding the mall after most land was bought by development company, The GPT Group.

Long-term leases were signed by more than 20 companies during the past two years, including Surfhouse Photography owner Alex Thompson, who started on a 30-day agreement before signing a lease 12 months ago.

"There is still one site in the mall that's empty and that's only because no one could find the owner, and we still can't," Renew Newcastle founder and creative director Marcus Westbury said.

"There are a couple of others that are no longer structurally sound that we couldn't use, but apart from that it has been a 100 per cent success rate.

"We still have more than 50 projects waiting to move into empty shop spaces and revive the properties or even move into new sites that have been built but not leased."

Congratulations to Marcus and the Renew Newcastle team. I strongly believe cultural projects mixing it up with business is the way to go for Newcastle City.

Get a few Op shops in there. Recycled clothing, Furniture etc. I must say the biggest problem with that is Parking to get the furniture so maybe they could offer a reasonable delivery within 15klms.

Years ago it was let's catch the bus go to top of town look in the shops have something to eat. IT WAS SAFE then. Pity society has gone to the way it is.

Good luck with the project

Nelson Bay could learn from this

By cutting through red tape and using common sense Newcastle has great potential if you allow people to use it.Sadly we are saddled with local politicians who not only cannot change a daiper but need them changed for them. Let the normal Novocastrain do these projects and give the druggies, graffiti artists and drunks to the council to fix! That way you are on the way back to a world class city which all have haves[progressive positive thinkers]and have nots[local council, drug users and the 'ladies of islingington]Mr and Mrs Tate, the council and our court's lawyers could then take the have nots into their homes[they are always saying the have nots deserve a second chance!] and Newcastle is returned to a safe wonderful destination I can start bringing my friends and business associates back to. We are allowed to dream for Christmas aren't we?

I remember reading about this what an excellent result nothing breeds success like success. Good stuff let's hope some other run down CBD's consider the potential.

Renew Newcastle is an incubator for small local businesses that otherwise may not have got started. Approx 80% of small businesses generally fail within 5-years of commencing, often due to the burden of start up capital. Makes the success rate of Renew Newcastle even more striking by comparison.

Marcus Westbury deserves to be nominated & accepted as a 'Freeman' of NCC

Yep, great result - but please @scorpion, there is no such thing as a "graffiti artist". There are only ugly graffiti-ists, in plague numbers, and genuine artists, few (like the TINA crowd, and that overpaid wanker Banksy), who occasionally express their Muse on public walls.

But, most importantly Scorpio, don't go anywhere near that lunatic Bear Grills - he'll bite yer head off mate!
