Report on Cessnock roadwork held back

Report on Cessnock roadwork held back

21 Jan, 2011 03:00 AM
Cessnock City Council has been accused of sitting on an independent report into the council’s roadworks performance and quality of work since late last year.

Greens councillor James Ryan accused the council of hiding or doctoring the report after he was advised by a spokeswoman for mayor Alison Davey that the independent report was ‘‘in draft form and the review is yet to be completed’’.

Cr Ryan rejected the explanation, saying the independent report was commissioned by the council in late 2009 after concerns were raised about the quality of roadworks carried out by the council after a number of incidents.

‘‘It’s not a draft report. It’s an independent report, which means it’s an assessment of our roadworks performance which should not need a review before it is presented to councillors and the public,’’ Cr Ryan said.

‘‘The trouble with not releasing the report is that people will immediately ask why. Is it because it’s embarrassing to the council? The Local Government Act says that just because a document or report is embarrassing, or people might misunderstand it, that’s not a reason not to release a report.’’

Cr Ryan said the council had been heavily criticised for the standard of its roads and councillors needed an objective assessment of whether it was getting value for the money it was investing.

‘‘Roads are a huge issue in Cessnock because we’ve got more kilometres per capita than other councils in the Hunter,’’ Cr Ryan said.

A spokeswoman for Ms Davey denied that the council was refusing to release the report.

as a cessnock ratepayer who had to endure shoddy hazardous roadworks "repairs" on sandy creek rd (in fact im surprised a bike rider or two werent injured or killed) i would like to see this report in the public arena urgently.

Living in an area that surely brings much needed revenue from the vineyards, I am at a loss as to why I have to drive over 600 metres of pot-holed dirt road every day on Paynes Crossing Rd in Wollombi. Especially since I understand the road work has been funded mostly by the federal/state government.

So, Ms Davey, where's the report then? If you're not refusing to release it, let's see it.

No more guff about it being a 'draft ', you don't get to rewrite independent reports to make yourself look better.

Tar - I wholeheartedly agree with you. Sandy Creek Road "repairs" have failed badly. I have often wondered if it is poor methods used by the Council or some unusual ground conditions that is making the repairs fail time and time again. A look at the report would be very interesting!

If you want to see the state of Cessnock Councils inability to maintain a decent standard of road repair, drive from Cessnock to Wollombi and beyond on Wollombi Road.Absolutely shocking state especially between Cessnock and Millfield.

I nearly had an accident on Camp Rd yesterday when I hit a patch of "completed" roadworks at the allowed speed limit of 100km. The section they had completed was not at the same level as the rest of the road and there was no warning it was coming, I nearly veered into an oncoming car. I rang and reported it straight away but following reading this article I'm not sure anything will be done to fix it.

RTA has paid Cessnock council for roadworks on Wollombi Rd But still NO Repairs. Council has this money in a reserve Account making interest. We have Potholes that are Deadly and Repairs that arent much better Sandy Creek Rd in Mulbring Needs Urgent Repairs as does Wollombi Rd from Millfield to Wollombi Where most of the Fatal Accidents are. NO it is NOT ok to keep reducing the Speed Limit as a Cheaper Option to Repairs. Release this Report for us Rate Payers to all see As we are already Aware of the Dangerous Roads the council force us to drive on. I believe that we wont get any Decent repairs until one of the councillors have a fatal Accident on our deadly roads But until then we Still have Deadly, Unsafe Roads, and by the look of it we still have a Lazy Council

The neglect by the NSW Labor government is the only issue in Cessnock. We cannot blame the council for local roads when it is the State government that needs to do more.

It's a bloody joke! Look how long it took to get the Harpers Hill barricade section done and what a piece of work that is. Majors lane, Camp Rd, Broke Rd, etc etc. I like how they do all this grading of the new road base all nice and smooth, and leave it for a week or two to corrugate before sealing it. Wouldn't be a full set of teeth between them.

nothing has changed in half a century, my late father told me he knew a blind person who said he always knew he was back in the Cessnock LGA due to the change in the roughness of the ride in the vehicle in which he was travelling.
