Residents in AGL blockade told to move or be removed

12 Dec, 2011 03:00 AM
RESIDENTS blockading a road near Gloucester in opposition to AGL’s coal seam gas operations should move immediately or be removed by police, Gloucester Shire mayor Geoff Slack said yesterday.

The blockade by the Barrington-Gloucester-Stroud Preservation Alliance was established last Monday on a public road at Forbesdale.

The road was the access to AGL’s pilot well-drilling site.

Cr Slack, a solicitor, said the protesters were breaking the law and he had asked the police late last week to remove them.

‘‘They are blocking a public road and should be moved on,’’ Cr Slack said. ‘‘They do not represent the rest of the community, they are not farmers,’’ he said.

Police visited the blockade on Thursday and the alliance agreed to a request to move vehicles, but maintained a human blockade.

Later that day, AGL deferred its drilling plans and offered to continue negotiations with the alliance.

The halt in operations stopped a Gloucester company building an AGL access track, a move Cr Slack says has led to the company considering standing down 25 people.

‘‘And that will flow on through the rest of the community,’’ Cr Slack said.

‘‘[The protesters] should be dealt with immediately,’’ he said.

Cr Slack said Gloucester council had given ‘‘in-principal’’ support to the Gloucester Gas Project.

The state government had approved the 110 production well, first stage of the project.

Cr Slack said the company’s activities were legal and it should be allowed to continue.

He said he had visited three other coal seam gas field sites and it was his personal opinion that if a project complied with conditions of consent it should go ahead.

All work on stage one of the gas project has halted because the alliance launched a legal challenge.

When AGL halted the pilot wells last week, it agreed there would be no further drilling until the legal challenge was resolved and an independent review of its Gloucester Gas Project water assessments was completed and published.

Alliance chairman Graeme Healy said yesterday the blockade would stay. Mr Healy said the group wanted new water assessments.

AGL said it agreed to suspend drilling and hoped the blockade would be concluded.

The previous Mayor was deposed because of her anti-mining views, and a pro-mining Mayor installed. It hasn't taken him long to show his unbridled support.

What we have here is a difference of opinion, to be decided at the next Gloucester election. I am no scientist but I would believe that it could never be 100% safe

Here we see another council happily selling out it's residents and the environment to the mining sector. It may well be true that Slack and the other levels of government have made it legal for AGL to drill these holes. The thing is that they were wrong to do that, the law is wrong and it must be changed.

Most likely many of these people are NOT local residents as suggested in this news article.

Gloucester also represents the wider struggle that property owners, farmers, tree changers & even inner city people are facing across this beautiful country. Mayor Slack shows his colours in such comments. BTW Mayor Slack I am a coal miners daughter & own 30 acres & I LOVE THIS COUNTRY including beautiful Gloucester! Am I entitled to protest under your narrow & divisive selection criteria?

Thank you Mr Mayor for your great publicity.

The more people that become aware of this Gas exploitation be better.

I am sure as the Mayor learns a little more about the issue and negatives he too will oppose the exploitation.

Good on you blockaders! Stand your ground, Australia is watching, and will follow when it threatens other areas. This industry is unproven, unsafe and unwanted by all but the 1% who stand to gain big bucks off others misery.

Well just because the mayor of Gloucester reckons that council has given ‘‘in-principal’’ support to AGL doesn't mean to say that the majority of people support it. And I'd dare say if he still wants to remain mayor of Gloucester, after the next council elections, he'd better start to think about the long term picture, not only for the good of Gloucester, but also for his future as a councillor. CSG is simply no good. Both the state & federal govt are clearly having second thoughts about it. But it's ordinary people who have woken up, about how bad it is overall, & politicans better beware.

The (not even popularly elected) Mayor Slack, claims AGL are considering the removal of 25 jobs and already this will have some devastation on the wider Community. Gee Mayor Slack perhaps you shouldnt hatch all your community employment eggs in one basket, especially if just an AGL' consideration' can hold the communities survival at such risk!
