RETAILERS have reported a sales bounce as consumers go on a spending spree with their $900 bonus payments.
Stockland Wallsend women's fashion chain Crossroads was busy yesterday holding a Rudd-O-Rama sale.
Crossroads store manager Estelle Ebrahim said the stimulus was good for business.
"A lot of customers have received their bonus payment and are treating themselves to some new clothes or buying much-needed accessories," Ms Ebrahim said.
The payments, part of the Federal Government's second $42 billion fiscal stimulus package, began arriving in taxpayers' bank accounts and mailboxes in the Hunter yesterday.
Ms Ebrahim said she believed the bonus payments were doing what they were intended to do and creating consumer confidence.
Many businesses were offering sales.
The advertising, which featured a large poster with Kevin Rudd on disco roller skates, had created a great deal of interest among customers.
"I had one lady come in to the shop and buy quite a lot of new clothes," Ms Ebrahim said. "As she was leaving she looked at our sign and said, 'Thank you Mr Rudd.' "
