Rising Tide protest stops coal trains near Sandgate

21 Dec, 2009 04:00 AM
HUNDREDS of thousands of tonnes of coal worth millions of dollars was stopped dead in its tracks yesterday as environmental group Rising Tide vented its anger at the United Nations climate talks in Copenhagen.

Twenty-three protesters, including Newcastle Greens councillor Michael Osborne, were arrested and charged after blocking the line near Sandgate from 9am until 3pm.

The train driver saw the protesters on the track and stopped the slow-moving train before it crossed the Hunter River.

About a dozen eastbound coal trains were affected by the protest, while empty trains were unable to return to the coalfields from Kooragang Island.

The protesters were disappointed that the UN climate talks failed to produce a legally binding treaty to reduce carbon emissions.

They were especially critical of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Climate Change Minister Penny Wong.

Among them was Cr Osborne who said, "I think Kevin Rudd's pathetic" as he was led to a police vehicle.

Some protesters placed bicycle locks around their necks and attached themselves to the train.

Eighty-six year-old Bill Ryan from Wollongong was the oldest protester and one of the first to be arrested.

The most difficult arrests were of four people who hung from the bridge over the river and a man who sat about four metres above the track on a tripod.

Officers from police rescue, the public order and riot squad, water police and general duties officers attended the scene, as well as two ambulances and a NSW Maritime boat.

Acting Inspector Alan Janson said police were given no warning and were forced to dedicate a lot of resources to the protest.

Brad Emery, spokesman for the Australian Rail Track Corporation, said the protesters should think about the impact their actions have on the Hunter economy and jobs.

"Protests like this cost millions of dollars," he said.

Well done to the Greens. That will definitely work. Australians should never ever again elect one of these to any seat in government.

Cr Osborne should be sacked from council. People who commit criminal actions should not be allowed to represent the majority of the people who do not support illegal protests.

What do these think they will achieve by this protest. Global warming is a load of bull. How do you explain the snow that they having in France at moment and it was only about 20 years ago these same climate change experts where talking about another ice age so who is right. People have been trying for ages to control and predict nature and not once have they come up with a theory that will work.

These clowns who call themselves 'Rising Tide' are not activists, they are criminals. There are ways of getting your point across and have them regarded as being constructive to the topic. Rising Tide are going about it like kids in a kinder class, spoilt brats. If you want recognition and if you want respect for your cause and beliefs, do it in a legal and respectable manner. As for Cr Osborne and his merry tribe would you like to cough up the cost of Police resources for the afternoon? Arent you lucky they all werent needed somewhere else in a hurry!

As ye have sown so shall ye reap. The climate change hysterics have created a band of zealots who care nothing for rail passengers wanting to reach their destination on time. Surely a more productive exercise for these zealots would be to chain themselves to Mt Mayon in the Philipines in protest at the effect its pending eruption would have on climate change.

Michael Osborne should be stripped of his position as Councilor fre breaking the law, supposed to be an upstanding member of the community, obviously he isn't.

23 people out of a Hunter Area population of nearly a million. 23 people so sure of their own infallability that they think they have the right to dictate to the other 999,977 of us. 23 people with their self-appointed moral superiority interfering in the jobs of other people.
