Rising Tide protesters hit Kooragang conveyor belt

05 Aug, 2011 10:20 AM
Rising Tide protesters have scaled a 15-metre-high coal conveyor belt this morning at Kooragang.

The protesters have suspended a banner that reads: “We’re sorry Somalia. Coal = climate change and starvation”.

The protesters said they wanted to highlight coal’s contribution to Somalia’s famine

They said scientists had this week made the link between human-made climate change and the deadly drought affecting more than 10 million people across the Horn of Africa.

Rising Tide spokesperson Naomi Hogan said coal was recognised globally as the biggest contributor to climate change.

‘‘Yet, while climate disaster ravages East Africa, coal companies operating here in Australia are planning to massively expand their coal production, ignoring all the negative impacts,’’ she said.

‘‘We are standing in the belly of the beast, here in the world’s largest coal port, calling on the coal industry to reverse their plans to more than double Australia’s coal exports.

‘‘It’s about time the coal giants took responsibility for their contribution to the dangerous impacts of climate change.

“Tens of thousands of Somalis have already died and hundreds of thousands face starvation.’’

The protesters have called on coal companies to donate some of their profits to victims of the drought.

“These severe droughts, floods, famines and extreme weather events will continue to worsen with climate change,’’ she said.

A Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group spokesman said machines had been stopped in the interests of safety and police had been called.

Comment has been sought from coal loading companies.

More to come.

I note that these protestors are not in a real job today. On social security?

These people need to get a job...

they're poorly informed and ineffective. When they are gone what they have done will be of no value to anyone.

They should name some of their success stories without using the phrase "drawing attention to"

because we all know that these shows are about "drawing attention to" themselves.

Brave people, standing up for the future, including the near future.

These protesters, to the best of our knowledge, are likely to be right on the money, and are merely trying to jolt us all into consciousness.

No amount of snarling by the misguided or the self-interested will make any difference if the protesters are right.

The rational approach to negative climate change predictions is risk management - the thing we often don't do well before so many catastrophes.

Time to stop sneering and start taking stock.

Its time to lock these people up. Coal from Australia = Somali famine.............give me a break. People like these are ruining this country. Take a look at the state of our government policies and its effect on our economy, all due to the green minority. Wake up Australia, you are being used.

Irresponsible idiots who will achieve nothing more than the status of public nuisances!

Perhaps the ten million people on the horn of Africa could consider a Victims Compensation case against the Port Waratah Coal Services.

Of course over population (people breeding like rabbits) and civil war would have nothing to do with the current famine in East Africa?

These idiots are doing their cause no favours. The more they infuriate people the more the community is going to side with and support the coal industry.

Exploiting the famine in Somalia an excuse to parade themselves in front of the media for their own self gratitude is an absolute disgrace.

I hope a judge locks them up this time.
