Rising Tide protesters interrupt first day of new coal loader operation

23 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
NEWCASTLE's new third coal-loader hit another milestone yesterday when the first ship tied up at the new Kooragang Island number eight berth to receive a cargo of Wambo coal, bound for Japan.

But in a sign of the international debate over coal use, the arrival of the Sunny Success was marked with a protest by climate-change activists Rising Tide.

Rising Tide spokeswoman Anika Dean said protester Carly Phillips slung herself over the side of a wharf bollard to prevent the Sunny Success from reaching the wharf.

Ms Dean said Ms Phillips was one of four Rising Tide members arrested in a protest that delayed the ship for at least an hour.

She said Ms Phillips was charged with a single count of entering enclosed lands and was bailed to appear in Newcastle Local Court on April 20.

The other three Rising Tide members were released without charge.

For the coal company members of the Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group, doubling Hunter coal exports is a cause for celebration.

The group's loader will ship as much as 30 million tonnes a year from its first stage.

A group spokesman said yesterday's protest had no impact.

Loading was expected to start this morning.

And no doubt Carly went home to the convenience of electric lights and appliances, something that many millions of people can only dream of in China, India and many other places where this coal is destined for.

Another ill-directed pointless gesture.

One person makes a mistake and the individual slung over the fender dies, gets crushed by a 200,000 T ship. Would many people have a lot of sympathy? I think not.

Just before all the coal company stooges and Port Authority cronnies get on here bagging "the stupid greenie". I would just like to say that I love that we live in Australia and WE can have freedom of speech and a right to protest. Quite frankly I too am sick to death of coal killing our fertile valleys, destroying airways and waterways. That is without even getting into global impacts. Whether you believe in Climate Change or not ( & lets face it the Hunters addiction to Coal has placed quite a few in the denial group) the fact remains that Coal is a finite resource. I like this analogy to business as usual approach "we are in a car headed for a brick wall at speed, where every action & decision will have an impact on survival, yet the occupants are stil arguing over seating arrangements"!

Why is it we can't go and destroy the property of Rising Tide members? I think it would be a great idea for other vigilante groups to target these individuals and their own houses. Oh, sorry, I forgot, these people don't own any property or anything of value.

These people need to get a life. Do they realise that the dole money most of them get is paid for by taxes taken out of the coal industry (whether it be direct taxes on the coal companies or income tax on the workers). Harsh comment I know, but probably fair in 90% of cases. What the Courts need to do is calculate the cost of delaying the vessel by an hour and then charge the protestors with damages to that amount. That should lock them up for a while so they have second thoughts about doing it again. As for the whole man-made climate change argument. It is a load of garbage. Man made climate change is not real. Look at the weather we have been having. Seems pretty standard and normal to me... Global warming, I mean man-made climate change is nothing but a con job. Created by the Thatcher government in the 80s to jam it up striking miners. It is now worth so much money to certain people that they have to stick with it. These protestors should go out and get real jobs and be contributing members of society.

Could these timewasters please find something better to do with their days off uni. Or actually walk the walk and turn off your power and have a full year of Earth Hour.

The time to protest was before the loaders destroyed a beautiful section of Harbour foreshore. The only reason for this monstrosity is because of an internal fight between coal companies.
