NEWCASTLE’S female roller derby athletes will don fishnet stockings and a fierce attitude when the first game of the season kicks off tomorrow.
The Harbour Hellcats and Fort Smashleys will battle it out on the roller rink at Gateshead Indoor Sportsworld with some rivalry between the two teams still hanging over from last season when the Hellcats won the premiership.
Harbour Hellcats captain Susy Pow has been playing in the Newcastle Roller Derby League since September 2009 and has seen players suffer broken ankles, torn ligaments and countless bruises and bumps.
‘‘Its a weird mix of feminity and brute force,’’ she said.
Last season the women attracted crowds of up to 700 and players have made the shortlist for the Australian representative team to be announced tomorrow.
The Harbour Hellcats will take on the Fort Smashleys at Gateshead Indoor Sportsworld tomorrow. Gates open 5.30pm.
