Sack us over figs, say Newcastle councillors

15 Sep, 2011 12:30 PM
TWO Newcastle councillors have backed colleague Brad Luke’s call for the city council to be sacked and an administrator appointed.

As recriminations continued yesterday over the $750,000 Laman Street fig tree fiasco, lord mayor John Tate revealed that he wrote to Local Government Minister Don Page about Laman Street on August 29, asking for the matter to be investigated by the Division of Local Government.

In his email, Cr Tate said there was an ‘‘ongoing division in the Newcastle community’’ and that community concerns should be aired through an investigation.

‘‘I would strongly welcome an investigation by the Division of Local Government because it would allow everything that’s occurred [during this term of the council] to be evaluated,’’ Cr Tate said yesterday.

Cr Brad Luke, Cr Aaron Buman and Cr Mike King all said they would support the sacking of the council.

As the Newcastle Herald reported yesterday, Cr Luke called for an administrator to be appointed following Tuesday night’s council vote for an independent risk assessment on the figs, the 11th time the council has voted on the issue.

‘‘The best thing that could happen to this town is to not have a council for a term,’’ Cr Buman said.

‘‘The main reason is if you look at the council we’ve spent $1.3million dealing with residents who polarise the council into indecision.’’

Cr King revealed yesterday he had seriously considering quitting the council over the Laman Street issue, describing his term in civic office as ‘‘the most soul destroying experience of my life’’.

Cr King said he would not stand for re-election next year.

‘‘At this point, I would run away from the place as fast as my legs could carry me,’’ Cr King said.

‘‘I’ve got plenty of good things in my life, I don’t need this.

‘‘[Laman Street] is about votes. It’s not about trees, it’s about votes.’’

Cr King said he would see out the term to honour commitments made to community groups in his ward.

Fellow councillor Shayne Connell, whose vote saved the trees and approved an independent risk assessment, was heavily criticised by some colleagues for his role in the drama yesterday.

Several councillors said yesterday they believed before the meeting that Cr Connell would vote to remove the trees.

He backflipped on his previous vote and agreed to support a $40,000 independent assessment.

‘‘Everyone thinks Shayne’s a dog,’’ one councillor said yesterday.

‘‘He’s not going to be trusted again after what he did last night.’’

Cr Connell conceded he was ‘‘not a very popular boy’’ with some councillors, but defended his vote.

He said he had a commitment from Save Our Figs that they would accept the results of the independent assessment.

‘‘I’m confident that [Save Our Figs] facts don’t stack up against ours,’’ Cr Connell said.

‘‘As reluctant as I am to have it go on, in the scheme of things we can cop another four weeks.’’

Cr Connell also rubbished Cr Luke’s call for the council to be sacked.

‘‘Cr Luke has come out on the record calling for himself to be sacked.

‘‘I think that’s the best idea he’s had for three years.’’

In my opinion this SOF campaign is about getting more Greens on Council in place of Independents. Mike King just pipped Keith Parsons at last election, so his place is winnable, now this sensible, balanced, experienced manager has given up.

John Tate has again turned against his former running mate (Bob Cook), who has properly evaluated the need for fig replacement. This could be seen as punishment for leaving his, just as Aaron Buman and many others have done in past councils.

I believe Shayne Connell and Mike Jackson will not survive.

The Council needs to be sacked and an administrator appointed. Urgently.

When this currrent Council was sworn in, they declared their undying devotion to showing leadership and harmony. They solomely declared they would not be the same as the previous 'dysfunctional' Council they replaced. They had a "fabulous" new GM and they were going to save the city. Well the GM has gone and all the Councillors can do is tear themselves apart. Well done folks, I guess you really showed us how it's done! Oh, did I forget to metion the $10million spent getting rid of the previous management as well?

"Whose vote saved the trees? "

Is there a less biased way to say this? Such as "who, after studying all the detailed technical reports, suddenly changed his mind and voted against the recommendation of the Council's technical experts and their advisors?"

What forces got to Mr Connell to do this? I suggest that he is buckling under pressure from a paper that has consistently supported the emotional over the rational in this affair.

Yes please sack them!! Lets hope the DLG takes this seriously now. Maybe the councilors will finally agree on something now. The whole entity - administration included needs thorough external investigation. Maybe something good will finally come out of the great fig fiasco

Investigations, assessments - more money spent.

Is any money spent on real projects?

In my opinion, adminastration will almost certainly result in the removal of the laman street figs. Because no matter how they look at what has happened they will look at the enormous cost to ratepayers and the fact that the council is not functioning in the best interest of all ratepayers. On Tuesday Newcastle City Council simply voted for an independent assessment, and this is what Cr Connell supported.

He showed regard for the 11,500 plus that put their names to the biggest petition in the history of NSW.

While a minority of Councillors currently do not support the trees, let's not forget that in December last year Council voted to keep the figs.

An independent assessment is required to see if keeping the figs is a viable course of action.

Well done, Cr Connell for being willing to take the blow torch to the belly to get the right decision, not a quick decision.

While Newcastle is held to ransom by a minority group and 14 trees, the South Australia Coroners Court is hearing evidence against those responsible for refusing the removal of a large tree that fell onto a car and tragically killed the young woman driver last year. I believe SOF and supporting Councillors have lost all sense of perspective and proportion in this matter and are not acting the public interest.

Sorry to hear Mike King is looking to give away the Council. It's exasperating for professional managers to be involved the petty politics that are killing the city.

In my opinion competent and committed Councillors with the skill, qualifications and "ticker" to dig into the real issues and make big necessary changes are rare and usually give up after one term.

The best thing Mike can do for this city is to lobby the Minister to Sack the Council. Soon

Yeah, expect me to do everything I can to avoid paying taxes in the future.
