Scone to get rail overpass as part of election promise

29 Jul, 2010 04:00 AM
THE new mining tax would be used to pay for an overpass for the rail crossing on the New England Highway at Scone, in a significant election sweetener rolled out by Labor yesterday.

Coal trains rumbling through Scone's level crossings regularly cut the town in two for periods of about eight minutes at a time, frustrating motorists and prompting safety concerns if there was an emergency in the town.

In April, the federal government ruled out even considering an overpass for at least another three years but backflipped yesterday, saying planning would start before the year was out.

A spokesman for Federal Transport and Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese said in April there was no money available for the highway rail overpass, but the project might be considered in the 2013-14 spending program.

Mr Albanese hit the campaign trail yesterday and, accompanied by Member for the Hunter Joel Fitzgibbon, announced $2 million to plan the project, out of the $6 billion Regional Infrastructure Fund.

"This commitment from federal Labor is a tribute to the strong and persistent representations from Joel Fitzgibbon, a local member with a reputation for being a fierce advocate for the needs of the Hunter," Mr Albanese said.

Mr Fitzgibbon said the anticipated increase in mining activity was expected to cut the town off even more and an overpass was the solution.

"It is important to recognise that these are the kinds of projects we will be funding under the minerals resource rent tax," he said.

Nationals candidate for the seat of Hunter, Michael Johnsen, pointed out the Coalition had also promised to fund an overpass at Scone, which was announced earlier this week.

"One key point is that our commitment is not contingent upon the mining tax," he said.

"We see no need to blackmail the industry and its workers when, the ARTC [Australian Rail Track Corporation] has, for the last two years, predicted a problem on the Scone level crossing."

Ah the old money for planning but no date set for construction or completion trick! Would you believe it! Surely not our trusted rusted old Labor hacks. They wouldnt treat the electorate with contempt would they? Keep an eye out for a lot more of this type of cheap vote grabbing announcements over the next three weeks and then nothing. I am sure all those people stcuk in 8 minute delays at the crossing will be re assured by Albanese 'planning' announcement.

They have announced $2 million to plan the project but I did not read how much has been allocated to construct the overpass. A clever ploy to assist their member Mr Fitzgibbon in the electorate.

NOTE THE KEYWORDS: Planning, 2013-2014 (ie: AFTER the next federal election is due), but most importantly, is it in a SAFE seat? Isn't interesting (not) that they seem to have money at hand for a swinging seat, but when it is a safe seat, or a seat not held by the sitting party, no money is available. THIS IS FOR ALL POLITICIANS: Stop thinking that only swinging seats matter.

Certainly a very needy project however it does not take $2m to make some plans.

A Rail overpass in Scone town would NOT WORK !! Rail & heavy traffic must go west of town across the floodway [elevated where there can be NO FUTURE DEVELOPMENT ] AN OVERPASS WOULD NOT WORK !! : For the Abatoir ? For the saleyards? For Scone Motel? For the Mare & Foal Statue [ our wonderful town icon !! Known the world over !! ] For The Towns Memorial Swimming Pool ? For the second rail crossing in Liverpool St ? For the Towns Bus Depot ? Many other business' too numerous to list ?? For the time it would take to construct & the disruption to our WHOLE TOWN ??? Look how long we have watched the overpass to Singleton Army Base ? Still not finished although officially opened [ after 2 years ? ] Do we want a similar monstrosity right in the middle of our town ? Do our suggestions or OBJECTIONS fall on DEAF EARS ?? Those who don't live in OUR TOWN ?? Its a great place to live work and enjoy country life !! We citizens of SCONE WON'T accept a BANDAID solution !! If coal has to come through Scone and cut our town in half four hours every day, how can we MOVE FORWARD ??? Enough is enough !! If coal has to come through SCONE aa bypass at Federal OR COAL

We do not think an overpass is an option for Scone. The rail & heavy traffic should go out of town. An overpass will not work: For the Abatoir ? For the saleyards ? For Scone Motel ? For the Mare & Foal Statue ? [Our Icon ] For the memorial Swimming Pool ?? For the second Rail Crossing ?? [ Liverpool St ] The Bus Depot ?? And many other business' too numerous to list ??? For the time it would take to construct & the DISRUPTION to our whole town ? [ Look at how long the overpass East of Singleton has taken ]? Can you imagine that in Scone ? Still not finished more than 2 years on ? We could go on & on !! Do we need to ??OR DOES IT FALL ON DEAF EARS WHO DON"T LIVE IN OUR TOWN ? Sorry but we have been writing to this Council for thirty years about the problems we could forsee ? We citizens keep accepting a BANDAID solution. Enough is enough !! If coal has to come through Scone it HAS TO GO OUT OF TOWN AT THE COAL CO. EXPENSE !! Graham & Helen Walker .

If it costs $1mil for a COLA for a school, i think the $2mil to draw up some plans it quite under budgeted.

An overpass is a cheap, bandaid cure for one rail crossing only, being foisted upon Scone by government and private bodies that are causing the problem, stand to make billions over the next 60 year and don't give a damn about Scone. if Scone takes the overpass that's all it will ever get, except of course for the millions of coal trains that will rumble and hoot through, delaying, disturbing and dusting the town as well as the millions of trucks that will thunder through town, 24/7 for all of those 60 years and beyond! If the overpass is built every one of those trucks in both directions 24/7 will rev it's way up the incline and air brake its way down. And since they are raised up, all that noise will be able to spread over the town joining the hooter and engine noise from the trains! Nice country town! Wake up Scone before it's too late and demand that the train line and highway be moved around the town at the expense of those that are causing The Coal Train Problem and profiting from it at our great expense!
