Scone to run richest country horse race

20 May, 2009 05:00 AM
HORSE racing giant William Inglis Bloodstock has unveiled plans for a Saturday race meeting at Scone that would include the richest individual race run outside a metropolitan area.

The prizemoney for the Inglis Scone Guineas has the potential to reach $1 million, said Scone Race Club treasurer Noel Leckie.

Mr Leckie said the inaugural Guineas would be run next year and would be the culmination of a series of races put on by Inglis.

"Inglis is putting up $2.5 million worth of prizemoney and sponsorship," Mr Leckie said.

"Half of that goes to restricted races, the other half are bonuses that go into random races throughout the year. That money is only won if the race winner is a horse sold by Inglis and the purchaser has paid a $1000 race entry fee."

He said the inaugural Inglis Scone Guineas was already worth $500,000 as a result of the random race pool.

The Inglis Scone Guineas is a fantastic idea, and great for Scone and the Valley.

What a load of bull dust! People can say what they want about the horse industry and what it does for the economy. The fact is that MOST people in that industry get paid peanuts for what they do. It is run by a group of trumped up snobs. What a farce! It is immoral what bloodstock buyers pay for horses. Totally immoral. And worst of all, the people who lose most from horse racing are those who cannot afford it.
