 Sharp reply on figs cut

Sharp reply on figs cut

26 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
NEWCASTLE City Council says work to remove the Laman Street figs "will recommence soon", but won't comment on specific plans after taking out a full-page advertisement in yesterday's Newcastle Herald.

While the council won't release details about the latest version of "Operation Beanstalk", the advertisement gives the clearest indication yet that chainsaws are being readied.

Protests by fig supporters, similar to the scenes on October 7 last year when work began briefly, are expected.

T he open letter from council general manager Phil Pearce urges demonstrators to conduct themselves in a "respectful and lawful manner".

"I acknowledge that not everyone is happy with this outcome," Mr Pearce wrote.

"However, I am seeking the community's understanding in this matter and ask people to recognise that the individuals involved in the removal of the trees are doing their jobs."

Fig supporters took to a Facebook page yesterday to complain about the advertisement.

"Phil Pearce if you feel that your actions in this matter are completely justified, why did you feel the need to waste more rate payers money to justify yours and the councillors (sic) actions?" Cindy Smallman wrote.

The council said yesterday it was "good practice to communicate its activities and decisions with the community" and the advertisement was considered the best and most cost-effective way to reach a broad audience.

"Most importantly, as work on removal of the trees is to commence soon, the general manager wanted to make a genuine plea to potential protesters asking that they demonstrate in a respectful and lawful manner so that the safety of contractors, council officers and community members is not put at risk," a spokeswoman said.

Lord mayor John Tate called this week for the felling of the figs to be halted until after the September local government elections.

Tate is finally the voice of reason after so long. Hold off until we can start to chop the rot in the council before we can even consider the trees. Look at Hunter street, how is this even a priority.

The trees are still standing strong, as obviously they would be, despite these claims they are at risk of imminent collapse by one of four 'independent' assessments by the council.

The SOF's assessments say otherwise.

The trees should stay.

It's lip quiver and pout time for the SOF brigade!

Lets hope that the police put a few of the protesters in jail this time.

Just get on with the task at hand & be done with it NCC!

To all commenting on the trees.

All documents relevant to the risk assessment are available on the council website. There has been transparency through every step of this process. To those who question some methods, please remember that these reports were written by leading arborsists and have been peer reviewed by others for accuracy and reliability.

The reports and facts used by Newcastle council are unquestioned in the professional community. No Arborist has presented an official report that gives an alternate opinion.

A plea to SOF to behave themselves? Good try. As they've already shown they don't know how, particularly with the Mayor urging them on.

At the risk of showing the darkness in my soul, as one of SOFs leading lights so comically put it, get on with the chop!

The letter to the public from NCC was excellent. Factual, to the point and asking people to be respectful towards the contractors and council staff who are just doing their jobs.

The problem is that the people who need to hear what was said didn't hear the message. They cry foul about councils intentions and the money spent on the ad. It was needed and has costed alot less than the money wasted by SOFigs and their protests to stop the removal of the figs. This would have been over with months ago if their protest hadn't happened and the serious waste of money would never have occurred

Wake up SOFigs. Try and be the peaceful, intelligent group you claim to be when the figs come down.

Let's get this over with & bring these trees down ASAP, enough is enough.

The letter states, "Council...is proud of its openness and transparency in this matter."

Then why isn't the Council being open and transparent with regard to the date the figs will be axed? Surely it's not privileged information...

The letter insults the intelligence of human beings.

I can probably write the news story for the day it will happen.... "Chainsaws arrive. Operation is delayed due to overly-emotional protesters making attempts to be martyrs. Police make arrests. Chainsaws push through and chop like crazy. Tears of hysteria in the street ."

Then in September, the news will read... "New Lord Mayor".

:-)
