 Smart car solution to parking

Smart car solution to parking

17 Jul, 2010 05:00 AM
The cars are smart and the developer says so too is the concept to combat parking shortages in one of the inner-city's newest developments.

Arvia apartments, on the corner of Watt Street and Shortland Esplanade, is thought to be the first residential block in Newcastle that will have a car share scheme when it opens in mid-2011.

The 99-apartment development will have 56 parking spots.

Newcastle City Council initially found a deficiency of 15 spaces, but approved the development with the two-vehicle car pool scheme a condition of consent.

Objectors cited the lack of on-site parking as one of their main problems with the proposal.

Developer Keith Stronach, who has acquired the first of two Smart cars for the development, said his daughter Cassie, a Sydney architect, came up with the idea.

"We were trying to find a clever way . . . to deal with the shortage of parking spaces," Mr Stronach said.

The body corporate will manage booking and hire.

Mr Stronach said residents who worked in the city or students using public transport would not need a full-time vehicle.

"It's a lot cheaper than owning a car," he said.

Hunter Commuter Council secretary and Newcastle councillor Graham Boyd said the system sounded feasible.

"It was good to see a developer taking some responsibility to try and offset the lack of car parking spaces for the residents," he said.

Most car parking spaces are only made to accomodate tiny cars now. They jam in as many car spaces as possible to get developments passed, but they are not adequate. They just cause loads of scrapes and damage to vehicles, because drivers cannot negotiate car spaces. That would help push up insurance costs.

It should be 56 appartments with 99 car spaces. Like it or not the car will be with us for a long time. All modern cars are smart with efficiency constantly improving. Peak oil will not be an issue.

The smartest solution is to retain the heavy rail to Newcastle Station and add a light rail along the coast from Newcastle Station.

I would like to congratulate Keith Stronach for this proactive move, I am sure that this iniative will suit a lot of residents. What it says to me is that Developers are not always the Bogeyman that they are branded. In some ways they see what needs to be done and some of their ideas make a lot of sense. This is one of them. Congratulations Keith and your Smart Daughter.

Mr Stronach what a scam, you build a 99 apartment block and provide parking for only 56 cars and come up with this lame excuse knowing full well that the reality is that 99 appartments will more than likely need 99 car spots,. If you had to provide parking spots for all the appartments, then you may have only had 75 appartments, what a scam. 43 apparments will be disadvantaged, can you imagine the fights that will happen especially if one of the appartment has the hide to have guests who own a car visit them.

Bigfeller " Like it or not the car will be with us for a long time. All modern cars are smart with efficiency constantly improving" to quote you. So why do you keep on carping about retaining a extremely poorly used rail line into Newcastle Station and a now as on another post a bleeding light rail line along Merewether Beach?

Thinkitthrough, you need to do exactly that, the rail line needs to stay and be supplemented with a light rail system, even the Government doesnt believe the HDC report as they are now doing their own study.
