THE Victorian Bushfire National Day of Mourning will be observed by churches throughout the Hunter Region tomorrow.
The majority of churches will include memorial prayers and reflection in their regular Sunday services.
Special memorial services will be held at Adamstown Uniting Church at 9am, St John's Anglican Church, Wollombi, at 10am and Newcastle Salvation Army, the Monastery, Woodstock Street, Mayfield, at 1.30pm.
A bushfire fund-raising event organised by federal Shortland MP Jill Hall, state Swansea MP Robert Coombs and Lake Macquarie Mayor Greg Piper at Belmont South Foreshore reserve will hold a memorial service at 12.25pm.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Victorian Premier John Brumby declared February 22 a National Day of Mourning to honour and support the victims of the devastating Victorian bushfires and to recognise the work of the emergency services.
An official service held at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne will be televised nationally on the ABC and channels Seven, Nine and Ten at 11am.
Hunter members of State Parliament have invited the public to sign books of condolence, which are kept in each member's electorate office.
Port Stephens Council and the YMCA will acknowledge the National Day of Mourning by donating all casual pool entry fees for the Lakeside Leisure Centre to the bushfire appeal.
