State buys Newcastle post office for $4.25million

21 May, 2010 03:16 PM
The State Government has bought the former Newcastle post office building for $4.25million.

Newcastle MP and Hunter Minister Jodi McKay announced the acquisition on site this afternoon, moments after the deal was sealed.

‘‘I’m very please to say today the Newcastle post office is back in the hands of the people of Newcastle,’’ she said.

Sydney developer Sean Ngu put the property to auction yesterday.

The historic site was passed in when it failed to reach its reserve price.

The highest bidder for the property was cosmetic surgeon Dr Jerry Schwartz who offered $3.333 million.

The Schwartz family trust owns the Crowne Plaza in Newcastle, the historic Victoria Hotel in Melbourne, the Mercure Sydney Hotel, Rydges at World Square Sydney, the Macquarie Boutique Hotel Sydney and other hotels in Sydney and Canberra.

Representatives of the NSW Government were in talks with sales agents to buy the property on Wednesday night.

Those negotiations were not successful.

Ms McKay said the Government re-entered negotiations when it became apparent that another interested party, who wanted to turn the building into a nightclub, had entered discussions.

A good result. However I'm sure it is nowhere near enough to get you re-elected Jodi.

So the State government has listened to the public voice at last. Must be an election in the near future. Hopefully they will also listen to the public on the rail issue and announce once and for all it is staying.

Good news. Let's hope the NSW Government moves quickly to restore the building back to its former glory.

well that's a bit of a blow for the progression and renewal of the cbd...i highly doubt the liquor and gaming licence pre-approval will EVER be used.

Well done Jodi! I certainly hope that some of her more veracious critics will now acknowledge her part in the return of this heritage building to public ownership. It should never have been sold in the first place and it's a perfect example of the mean penny-pinching, cost-shifting behavior of the unlamented Howard Government..Now if we could just get rid of GPT.

More wasted money by the NSW Labor government.. Perhaps they can flog it off to Kevin07 and Gillard to use as a school hall.

So let me get this right. Our Gov sold the buliding for less than $2m, while it was in good repair and condition. NOW, we buy it back as a derilict piece of crap for double the money. Yeh, that makes sense labour.

What a relief !! But how bad is it that someone can make a cool $2mill+ by doing absolutely nothing, and in fact, costing the ratepayers of Newcastle for the security measures that have had to be enacted in the last few years in an attempt to protect this landmark building. Hope something worthwhile is done with it now.
