Sun shines for one Powderfinger fan

NEWCASTLE resident Nicole Gerrard joined Powderfinger backstage for their final show, in their home town of Brisbane, on Saturday night.

The five-piece band finished 21 years of rock’n’roll in front of 10,000 fans.

Gerrard, who hails from Boolaroo, was chosen from dozens of video entries through a Jetstar competition to join the five members backstage and see the concert.

‘‘I’m shaking, sweating, and my head normally works a lot better than this,’’ she said during the emotional evening.

Powderfinger launched their Sunsets Farewell Tour in September in Newcastle and it went on to play 34 dates, giving everyone in Australia the chance to say goodbye. The five members offered varying reasons for the split, from family commitments to different ambitions to a desire to go out on top.

‘‘I’ve got my five children, horses and dogs in Newcastle, and asked them to take me away to Brisbane,’’ Gerrard said of her winning video entry.
