Surfer mauled by shark at Redhead Beach

19 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
A 44-year-old surfer has survived a vicious attack by a two-metre-shark that dragged him from his board and circled him as he desperately tried to make it to shore.

The man was lying on his board about 20 metres from a large group of surfers off Redhead beach about 4.45pm yesterday when he was attacked by what was believed to be a bull shark.

The shark took a large chunk out of his thigh and dragged him under water, witnesses in the surf said.

Horror day on beaches

The man was able to shake himself free and get to the surface where he screamed for help while trying to get back on his board and paddle to safety.

Several surfers came to the man’s aid and helped him catch a wave into shore where lifeguards were waiting to begin treating him for his wounds.

Paramedics transported the man to the John Hunter Hospital.

The victim, Glen Folkard, of Whitebridge, also known as ‘‘Lenny’’, is 44 and owns Downunder Tattoo at Charlestown.

A Hunter New England Health spokeswoman said the man had suffered deep cuts to his upper thigh and was in a stable condition last night.

Lifeguards immediately evacuated surfers and swimmers and said they were closing the beach indefinitely.

Nathan Visscher, among several surfers who came to the man’s aid, said Lenny was furthest out in a large group of about 15 surfers.

‘‘He just started yelling ‘‘help, I need help’’,’’ Mr Visscher said.

‘‘I saw a trail of blood coming from him and then his board popped back up.’’

Another surfer, Tony James, said he saw the shark follow the man and circle him while he was trying to get to safety.

‘‘It’s just hit him and took him under for a bit,’’ he said.

‘‘He’s managed to get to the surface but I saw it start to follow him.’’

Mr James said he thought the shark was more than two metres long.

Westpac rescue helicopter began air patrols after the attack and spotted several large groups of sharks off Redhead and Blacksmiths beaches. There were also reports of sharks off Bar Beach and Newcastle yesterday.

All Lake Macquarie beaches have been closed until after further inspections today.

I live just by Newcastle Beach. Funny to see when the shark alarm sounds all the swimmers go out from water but all surfers stay. Some young lads with boards seem to feel even more encouraged to go into the water.

Where is the rest of this story - you know about the sharks murdered yesterday by humans in Australian waters?

If this area is prefered shark habitat then it should be declared a marine reserve and swimming, boating and fishing banned from the area and with some hefty fines for people interfering with the marine life. No people interfering with the sharks = No shark attacks.

Someone forgot to close Blacksmiths beach last night. No signs up and plenty of us surfing out there.

@Mel You serious? I don't much like the word "unAustralian" but banning people from the beach would be about as unAustralian as it gets.

Mel, I think the only interfering the guy was doing was sitting out on his board in the water.

I thought there were nets out there?

@goodone cannot agree more with that statement!

@mel, pretty sure surfing has a near non existent impact on marine life...
