Surveillance job to catch Cardiff vandals

Surveillance job to catch Cardiff vandals

23 Jun, 2009 09:09 AM
CARDIFF'S central business district was hit with about 100 graffiti tags over the weekend, sparking the town's chamber of commerce to offer a surveillance job to catch offenders on camera.

Cardiff Chamber of Commerce president Robert Denton spent much of the weekend cleaning up the mess.

"There's three walls in this town within 200 metres of each other that I've removed graffiti from three times in the last two days," Mr Denton said yesterday.

Mr Denton said nobody wanted to pay for a closed-circuit television system.

"The next best thing is to hire a photographer with a long lens to do covert surveillance," he said.

"I'll set them up on top of a roof with a few sleeping bags. They'll have a perfect angle to where the offenders are doing it."

Mr Denton said that he believed fewer than 10 people were responsible for the graffiti.

"They are juveniles. They have been caught before and it doesn't seem to bother them," he said.

The graffiti attack coincided with Lake Macquarie City Council's crime prevention plan, approved last night, which said "graffiti must be prioritised in relation to safety for individuals within the community".

"When we speak of safety, there is a clear and defining difference between damage to property and the safety of individuals," the plan said.

"Personal safety will always be the priority for the local area command."

The plan said "unfortunately, we may never completely resolve the issue of graffiti".

A minority of individuals used graffiti "to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with their surroundings".

Mr Denton said officials tried to play down "minor crime", but he said it had many victims.

He said graffiti "hurts the economy" because it deterred consumers.

Tough justice, that is what is needed. The offenders must receive a punishment that they respect. Television cameras are however a bad idea, as they invade the privacy of customers. I have nothing to hide, but would not come shopping in Cardiff if "big brother" was watching.

Hiring snipers to camp out on the roof will have a much better result. I am sick of these morons defacing any surface they like. The laws aren't tough enough, so when they do get caught they just get a slap on the wrist. The community needs to do more to stop this mindless vandalism. Cardiff looks bad enough without adding grafitti to the mix.

Miss `Just a thought' It's not good to see the advocating of shooting children with high powered rifles as an answer to the issue. if violence against perpetrators solved problems we wouldnt have any. Maybe one day you will have more than one thought jump into your head and online. I once was at a takeaway store that had it's back fence graffitied. The offender was known to the community and had recently died of a drug over-dose. The owner seemed quite happy about this fact. I was compelled to question him on his delight at a dead child. He then conceded that his happy public proclamations of the death was not actually something he believed, and that the dead child's mother lived in the community, these statements to his customers may have an impact on her and her loss. So i ask you to have `just a thought' about if you delight in dead children. Will you find that `not a thought' has been put into your response?

Dingdong, you are perfectly named, you live in a fairyland. These Graffiti scum don't deserve any consideration, they are just mindless twits who just wreck the community and should have been taught properly by their "Mothers" to respect everyone and everything. Many thousands of dollars and work hours are spent by council each year trying to make the community a pleasent place for people to live only to have these idiots spray paint on everything.

If they can't be shot dingdong how about just cutting the squirt finger off, thats the finger that presses the nozzle of the spray can. Just tounge incheek, but a penalty more fitting the crime is required.

Dingdong, just wondering if any thoughts go through the vandal's minds when they are destroying property, I would say not; probably too many aerosol fumes have rotted their brain.

they should simply be caught by volaunteer police and then bankrupted or jailed
