Tango, but no roses thanks

THE Hunter will be struck by tango fever this weekend.

Newcastle dance studio Cielo will host Obsession Tango, a weekend of lessons, workshops, live demonstrations and an evening of Argentine tango.

The workshops will be led by World Tango Championship semi-finalist and international tango teacher Belen Silva.

Argentine tango was developed in the bars, clubs and brothels of Buenos Aires around the late 1880s.

Newcastle tango dancers Jessika Schaad and Julio Braslavsky said there was a small community of Argentine tango dancers in the region.

Ms Schaad said the idea behind the weekend was to promote Argentine tango in Newcastle.

"The Latin scene is big in Sydney where you can dance every night of the week at three or four different venues," she said.

The couple, who had been dancing Argentine tango for the past 3? years, said it was not the rose in the mouth cliche but a slow, technical dance that allowed for a lot of creativity and interpretation.

"Tango is a feeling you can dance to," Mr Braslavsky said.

Bookings can be made on 4925 3532.
