POLICE have charged a 19-year-old man with the alleged attack on Maitland father-of-two Tom Biviano.
Maitland detectives charged the Rutherford teenager last night with one count of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and affray.
Police said they arrested the teenager yesterday at a Denton Park Drive, Rutherford, house. They executed a search warrant at the house and seized a number of items.
The Herald reported yesterday that Mr Biviano's mother, Shirley Young, was keeping a bedside vigil at John Hunter Hospital.
Mr Biviano remains in a serious but stable condition with severe head injuries. He was put in a drug-induced coma after being rushed to John Hunter Hospital's intensive care unit on Saturday.
The 39-year-old had reportedly intervened to break up a street brawl early on Saturday when he was allegedly set upon.
Mr Biviano had been out on the town with a mate when they came across two groups of young men fighting near the intersection of Ken Tubman Drive and Bulwer Street about 2.50am.
Mrs Young said her son, a plasterer, was not a violent person.
"He's got a good heart. Everybody who knows him tells me what a good son I've got," she said.
An internet user claiming to be Mr Biviano's 13-year-old daughter Savannah posted a comment on The Herald's website yesterday, thanking people for their wishes for her father.
"My name is Savannah, I'm Tom's eldest daughter and I'd like to thank everyone for caring and I ask for any information anyone has to please be revealed," she said.
"But most of all I just hope and pray for my dad to wake up the healthy, strong and beautiful person he is."
The teenager charged over the incident is expected to appear in Maitland Local Court.
