The Who rock the Hunter

30 Mar, 2009 03:00 AM
IT may have been Earth Hour but nobody was switching off the lights at Pokolbin's Hope Estate on Saturday night.

Instead, more than 10,000 people were switched on by one of the world's greatest rock acts as British outfit The Who took the stage shortly after 8.30pm.

Guitarist Pete Townshend, 63, cheekily welcomed the crowd to a concert of "old people's music" before introducing a song he said he wrote when he was 19.

The song was I Can't Explain, The Who's 1965 debut, an appropriate launch pad for a two-hour flight through the legendary group's hit-packed repertoire.

Meanwhile, the rock god who sang "I hope I die before I get old", singer Roger Daltrey, now 65, may not have hit all the highs of his younger days, but still put on a screaming microphone-swinging show that would shame most performers a third of his age.

With little new material to push, the set was overwhelmingly a greatest hits package that ranged from the raw '60s pop perfection of Substitute and My Generation, to '70s anthems of Baba O'Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again.

Being a younger fan of The Who, the old people's music is a lot better than the young peoples' music. Thank You to Hope Estate and The Who.

In the 1970's The Who were renowned as the best live band in the world. I think that they still are. The energy of the performance and the brilliance of the music were something to savour. I can only imagine what they must have been like in their 20's & 30's. I'm dusting off my old vinyls and rediscovering the music that I grew up with. Thank you to Roger, Pete and the band. It was a night I won't forget.

Substitute: I saw The Who at the Isle of Wight in 1969 and 1970 complete with the wild drummer Keith Moon and bass player John Entwistle. The band was absolutely brilliant. I lived there then and the festivals were "just up the road". I saw Hendrix, Dylan, The Doors etc etc... Ah, those were the days!

Just a reminder of the crap that is around today, governed by the dollar and the marketing plonkers. I was also one of the fortunate ones who grew up through the 60s and 70,s. You dont know what you missed, puts the current lot to shame.
