THORNTON company McDonald Jones Homes will confirm its position as the most prolific home builder in NSW when the announcement is made in Sydney today.
McDonald Jones defied the downward trend in the housing sector to post another remarkable rise in the number of new houses built.
The number of new homes built in NSW fell by 6per cent to 30,135 in the last financial year, which was the third lowest level on record.
But McDonald Jones recorded a 600per cent growth in the past six years to make it the major player in the state.
‘‘We’ve roughly got about 100per cent growth each year and it’s a fantastic pinnacle we’ve reached this year,’’ McDonald Jones director of sales and marketing Phil Haigh said.
‘‘We lead the market in NSW with product and architectural product and a new way to build houses with steel frames that are very sustainable.
‘‘We’ve led the market with those sort of movements and trends.’’
A Housing Industry Australia report outlined that the 20 largest builders in the state built 7182 homes last financial year compared with 7454 in 2009-10 and 6265 in 2008-09.
Hunter resident Bill McDonald started the company 25 years ago and is in partnership these days with Andrew Helmers and Peter Durbin, who are company directors.
Cessnock and Maitland were considered the Hunter’s housing hot spots.
Both the areas recorded a population growth of 1.8per cent, which was above the state average of 1.7per cent.
