Time running out for Merewether's Surf House

13 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
THE days are numbered for one of Newcastle's most prominent eyesores, with civic authorities stepping in to ensure Surf House is demolished, once and for all.

The Merewether beachfront site is approved for redevelopment, but a delay in getting rid of the derelict pavilion has prompted Newcastle City Council to take matters into its own hands.

The Herald understands that if developer Sailors' Rock does not have the old building down by April 23, the council will bring in the wrecking ball itself.

It comes as welcome news to Newcastle councillor Tim Crakanthorp, who lobbied for $150,000 for a public domain plan for Merewether Beach.

"I do think it's great news for the people of Newcastle and Merewether," Cr Crakanthorp said.

"There seems to be delay after delay. And it's time for some action."

Newcastle developer Keith Stronach, who leads the Sailors' Rock consortium, declined to comment on the April 23 deadline.

"We have contractual obligations with council," Mr Stronach said.

Mr Stronach put the Surf House redevelopment on the market in November, after saying when the council approved plans in August that the building would "definitely be down before Christmas".

He said yesterday that Sailors' Rock would construct the new building and expected to make an announcement in due course about a proposed tenant.

Surf House has been earmarked for demolition since April 2008, when the council was considering expressions of interest for the site.

The latest chapter follows years of public concern about the building, which was damaged in the 1989 earthquake.

There goes The Last Bastion of the Merewether Beach surfing history. What intelligence here! It shows how young this country is in the head when it comes to history. well guess what when this goes how will you replace it down the track? Remember Bar Beach pavilion?Oh well you loose some and you definately loose them all!!

Well here we go again - the Merewether Surf House is in the news again for all the wrong reasons. It is about time that the elected members of NCC took control of the situation, rescinded any arrangement with Sailors" Rock and any one connected with it, demolished the building and dedicated it as open parkland for the benefit of all that use the beach and surrounding facilities. The current developer has been flogging his proposal around since November with apparently no takers that will deliver him a nice profit. If he wants to retain his interests in this development it should be a matter of put up the dollars NOW or p..s off.

Isnt that what the story says? "if developer Sailors' Rock does not have the old building down by April 23, the council will bring in the wrecking ball itself" agree with Bazza - too much land banking going on in this town all waiting for that valuable railway corridor I bet - all those super-rich fix our city wannabes should put up their dough or get out of dodge

PK, apparently enough intelligence to spell "lose" correctly. How's your credibility? The building was a dump even in its best days. Get rid of it and put something decent there
