Towers emerge at former Royal Newcastle Hospital site

19 May, 2010 04:00 AM
ONE of the biggest developments under way in Newcastle at one of the city's most exclusive addresses is taking shape two months ahead of schedule.

Three towers have emerged on the former Royal Newcastle Hospital site and new public areas between the surf and streets unveiled.

Residents including families and first-home buyers have begun moving into the six-and eight-storey towers facing Shortland Esplanade.

A spokesman for developer Mirvac said in the next two weeks scaffolding was set to come off a third, tower at the rear of the site.

Known as the McCaffery building, it will include 88 Sebel hotel rooms and a penthouse that sold off the plan in November 2008 for $4.495 million, a Newcastle apartment price record.

The $190 million stage one of the Royal Newcastle development is due for completion in October, two months ahead of schedule.

The spokesman said about $1 million would be spent on public works.

This included a landscaped walkway between King Street and Shortland Esplanade, offering views of the surf .

Mirvac development NSW and Victoria chief executive officer John Carfi said the Royal development was creating a renewed sense of place on its prominent Newcastle beachfront site.

"The group is proud to be playing a prominent role in Newcastle's new urban dynamic and cosmopolitan renewal," he said.

Sorry but I think the new building is ugly. The window frames facing the coast protrude and it looks dumb. And the sandy brown colour is stale. Different paint job maybe.

It is pleasing to read of a successful development close to the CBD without the developer wanting the rail removed and no demands on the NCC.

And they look out of place due to their height. They should be about half that height.

6 and 8 storeys are hardly towers! Anyway they look so much better than those massive monster blocks that are popping up near railway stations in Sydney.

Well done Mirvac, you have done an exceptional job. Please come back to Newcastle City with more developments. Do you by any chance wish to take over and develop the GPT site?

Newcastle and inner suburbs should be high rise. That is what cities are all about. If you want a single storey bungalow, go bush!

Jealousy is a curse for some people isn't it?

Agree with you Old Boy. But the ones i saw were a yucky brown colour not like in the picture above. The colour in the picture looks heaps better. But thats about all thats wrong with them and they still look good. Well done. And could be another storey or two higher. On second thoughts the colour isnt that bad, its alright, starting to grow on me. Actually i think i like it now.
