A TREE made from cigarette butts and crocheted plastic bags were among the creations this year in an annual competition that asks artists to turn waste into art.
More than 240 works are on display in the Waste as Art exhibition at Newcastle Community Art Centre until July 25.
Oliver Hensel-Brown, of Adamstown, was named winner yesterday for his sculpture, Boccioni passing Woy Woy.
The futurist work was made from cardboard boxes the artist found in dumpsters.
Mr Hensel-Brown, who is studying at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, said the work was based on a futurist sculpture by Umberto Boccioni and Woy Woy because the town was the half-way point on the Sydney to Newcastle train, which he catches regularly.
"The original Boccioni is in shiny bronze and I wanted to humble it with cardboard," Mr Hensel-Brown said.
