Tween designer dressed to nines

ALORA Swanson is no ordinary nine-year-old she has a style all of her own.

Fed up with fashion that failed to complement the bodies of young girls facing the transition to womanhood, the budding Buttaba designer has created a line of "tween" clothing.

The fashion label, Just Mad - The Leo Collection, features 70 one-off pieces in its spring range for girls aged eight to 16.

It will be launched at Blackalls Park El Keziah Studio tomorrow.

"I'm always trying to think of designs," Alora said. "I think about them when I am going to bed, I look at what people are wearing whenever I go out. I look at their clothes and try to turn things around in my head to make them look better."

Alora's passion for fashion has become a family affair with design input from cousin Madison Murrell, 16, and sewing efforts from grandmother Kerrie Anne Mathews.

"Alora is the chief designer," Mrs Mathews said. "Nanny just sews."

The year 3 student's knack for style became clear when she started selecting outfits for her mother at just three years old.

"She would tell her mother 'you can't wear this pink with that pink - they just don't go'," Mrs Mathews said.

Evening dresses are among the tween outfits designed for "not quite teens" struggling to find fashion to suit their in-between age.

"Girls that are growing into adult sizes think that some of those clothes aren't the prettiest," Alora said.

The range, made mainly with stretch fabric and ties instead of zippers, would also help young girls feel confident as their body shape changed, Mrs Mathews said.

"It's so important because it is an age where girls are very self conscious and they can develop eating disorders, like anorexia, or depression," she said.

"There's a market out there of young girls just wanting to feel happy."

It is planned to release the tween spring collection each year.

Doesn't creating a market for tween fashion increase self conciousness? Particularly between the haves and the have nots. Let them just be little girls.....

She's 9 years old! From your article: " Fed up with fashion that failed to complement the bodies of young girls facing the transition to womanhood, the budding Buttaba designer has created a line of "tween" clothing. " And evening dress' for the 'not quite teens'? WHAT? If you are 'not quite a teen' shouldn't you be at home in bed with jimmy jams on instead of at a venue that requires an 'evening dress' How on earth would a 9 year old know what that feels like! Let her be a little girl and play with dolls. As if children don't grow up too quickly these days anyway!

Alora is an obviously creative and talented young person - she should be encouraged and supported in her endeavours. Initially I thought the article as written seemed to promote a semi-sexy image but when you really read it, and see the pictures, it is clear that she is designing functional, colourful and fun clothes in easy-care fabrics that can be worn by kids of all shapes and sizes, and for all sorts of activities. I agree that kids of this age shouldn't have to be worrying about the latest fashions etc., but the reality is that they do... Surely it's a wonderful thing to channel that energy into creating something positive that is also fun and useful, as she is doing?

Irrespective of what it is that this 9 year old girl is producing, the fact is she had an idea, has done something about it and is fortunate to have a great network of support. You had dreams at that age, and if you were given half the chance for your dream to become real would you have passed it up. At this age girls love to learn sewing, craft etc not only is she learning those skills, she has also learnt how to use it to benefit not just herself but others as well. At Nine they do wear 'going out at night dresses' to school dances; sport presentation nights and restaurants. I dont think this is about being stressed out about the latest fashion, its more about creation. Good on you Alora for following what you love. :)

I think it is wonderful that a nine year old girl has the enthusiasm and family support to follow through on a dream. How many kids dream of being something but never get the chance to follow that dream? I wish her every success in this fun adventure!

It's all well and good to criticism her. But I think it's time people wake up and realise that kids are growing up a lot quicker than they used to. We may not like this, I for one, can't imagine what it would be like to miss out on a childhood and I am only 18. But there is not a lot we can do to stop it. If she wants to design clothes, then good for her.

I went to the fashion show for this clothing line, and although the newspaper article makes out as if it is only alora making clothes for just "tweens" the clothing like is a lot broader with babys and childrens jumpsuits, kids play suits, tween dresses, teenagers formal wear and ladies skirts.while alora designed the tween clothes another 16 year old designed the teenagers line and then the rest of the clothing was a combined effort. the clothes are bright and colourful but also flatering and modest good on you girls for getting out there and having a go.
