Twilight sequel New Moon the hot ticket at midnight

07 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
LIKE the vampires they adore, hundreds of Hunter Twilight fans will come out in the dead of night on November 19 for midnight screenings of the hit film's sequel.

Twi-hards, as they have been dubbed, have snapped up more than 1300 tickets to Greater Union Glendale's five 12am sessions of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the second instalment in the brooding teen franchise based on US author Stephenie Meyer's novels.

Scotty's Cinema Centre at Raymond Terrace, Reading Maitland and Hoyts Charlestown will also have midnight screenings.

Many of these first New Moon showings are double bills, with the original Twilight screening before the clock ticks over to midnight.

Glendale cinema general manager Garth Weiley said New Moon was on track to outdo even Harry Potter movies for ticket pre-sales.

Glendale had only "a hundred or so tickets" left to its midnight screenings, mostly front-row seats.

"The breakfast sessions at 6am and 8am are also popular and we are considering adding a 2.30am session," Mr Weiley said.

Teenage girls made up the overwhelming majority of pre-sales.

"It's a modern-day Romeo and Juliet with a vampire twist," Mr Weiley said.

"But there are a lot of mums who will come quite willingly with their daughters."

As these recently released New Moon images reveal, heart-throb Robert Pattinson, who plays the brooding vampire Edward Cullen, has a rival for the affections of his teen sweetheart, Bella (Kristen Stewart).

Taylor Lautner plays the hunky werewolf Jacob, who comes between the lovers.

Twi-hards have devoured a sneak peek at the movie posted on YouTube this week.

The minute-long clip, dubbed the birthday scene, shows Bella opening a birthday gift from Edward's vampire family only to get an unwanted present: a paper cut.

New Moon is expected to surpass the $US383.5 million in worldwide ticket sales of the original film.

Twilight took $22 million at Australian cinemas and played for four months.

New Moon ticket sales will help push the nation's annual box office revenue past $1 billion for the first time.

Australians spent $815.5 million on movie tickets in the first 41 weeks of 2009, up 14.2 per cent on the same period in 2008.

The third Twilight movie, Eclipse, is being shot and is due in cinemas on June 30, 2010.

Production company Summit Entertainment plans to make one, and possibly two, movies from Meyer's fourth Twilight book, Breaking Dawn.
