THE University of Newcastle's famed Chamber Choir has been invited to the equivalent of the Choir Olympics in China.
The choir, which won the Seven Network's Battle of the Choirs in 2008, will travel to China for the 6th World Choir Games in July.
The 42-member ensemble was one of just five choirs selected to perform at the opening ceremony of the games and could be the only choir in Australia to compete.
The games will be held in Shaoxing, just south-west of Shanghai between July 15 and 26.
The Newcastle choir plans to compete in three of 20 categories: open, folk and contemporary.
Conductor Philip Matthias said it would be the first time the choir had participated in an international competition.
"I'm quietly confident we can get a good position," he said.
During the three-week tour the choir will also perform at Chinese universities.
