University of Newcastle says survey response rate 'not reliable'

12 Aug, 2009 04:00 AM
THE University of Newcastle denied it was trying to dodge negative publicity by refusing to supply data that would result in a low rating in the Good Universities Guide.

The 2010 guide, to be released today, omits ratings for the university in areas of graduate satisfaction, teaching quality and generic skills.

In the past two years the university has scored one star out of five all but once in the three areas.

Hobsons Australia general manager Davorin Vrdoljak said the university was one of three universities in Australia to refuse permission to publish the data because the response rate to its annual graduate survey was too low for the data to be considered reliable.

"We were quite disappointed," Mr Vrdoljak said.

The university's ratings in the guide remained largely unchanged compared with the 2009 book.

Ratings for staff-to-student ratios dropped from three stars to one star, overall student demand was down one star and staff qualifications were down one star.

The Central Coast gained an extra star for "toughness to get in" and indigenous participation rated five stars.

The university said the response rate for its graduate survey was 35 per cent and the Graduate Careers Australia code of practice said a response rate below 50 per cent should prohibit publication.

A university spokeswoman said the student-to-staff ratios range was very narrow and questioned the guide's assessment of student demand.

The university has 21 students to each teacher, but 20 students results in a three-star rating in the guide, and 17 students a five-star rating.

She said the university scored well in areas of access, participation and research.

Callaghan Campus had nothing but praise for the university yesterday.

Arts student Emma Forwood said teachers were very knowledgable and helpful.

Design and technology teaching student Patrick Lloyd said it was his third university and the best he had been to.

Art-science student Mathew Woodward said the university was large and there were plenty of services.

How does the University of Newcastle compare to Lake Macquarie's Avondale College?

the scores and 35% takeup say it all in a very poignant way to me.

I wonder how many students they had to interview before they got three positive comments?

This report clearly demonstrates the failure of the current University of Newcastle leadership to satisfy the most basic role that the NSW Legislation requires the institution to play in the local community. Perhaps the Vice Chancellor could also explain the recent (and very public) sudden removable of the University's Director of Corporate Data and his subsequent takeover of her role. A case of "shooting the messenger"?

Tuck shop ladies should be included in the staff headcount when calculating the student/teacher ratio.

They could have done an "ease of finding a car park" category - that would have been another 1 star effort. I don't even go to class anymore because the parking is a joke and half of a class is over by the time I find one. Pretty bad considering the money we pay for both parking and the courses.

I graduated a few years ago from this university with a teaching degree, and what an absolute disgrace it is. I found this out further after completing a Masters from another university which showed the complete lack of service and Lecturer professionalism at Newcastle University. One lecturer delivered the exact same content in completely different subjects in 1st year and 3rd year! Another pushed very hard through email and face to face contact to organise a class dinner at a restaurant so everyone could get to know each other and failed to tell that the restaurant was actually owned by the lecturer. Apparently this lecturer does this in every subject taught. Students need to realise they are paying a fair amount of money for their education, and do have to foot the bill at some stage and with this must come high standards and professionalism which lacks at this institution.

I'm at Newcastle Uni at the moment, but moving to Sydney next year and transferring to a Uni down there. Looking forward to a higher quality of teaching.

So if they don't get enough responses the scores don't get counted. It makes you wonder how hard the Uni management tried to encourage students to complete the survey if they felt they were going to get a bad result!
