Ute ploughs into Cessnock house

30 May, 2009 04:00 AM
AN ALLEGEDLY drunk driver smashed his car through a garage and into a Cessnock house.

Police said the 20-year-old Cessnock man had been driving his four-wheel-drive along George Street when he lost control at the intersection of Anzac Avenue and smashed into a garage about 11pm on Thursday.

The car continued forward, crashing through the house's laundry, and badly damaged a pillar supporting the kitchen roof before coming to a stop.

Amazingly the driver, his male passenger and the man sleeping inside the house were unhurt.

The house's occupant, who declined to be named, said he was shaken up by the ordeal.

He called police, who gave the driver a breath test.

Following a positive reading at the scene the 20-year-old was taken to Cessnock police station where he allegedly returned a reading of .155 and was charged with high-range drink-driving.

He is expected to face court next month.

A neighbour said the crash woke up the entire street.

"I heard this loud squeal and then a series of bangs as he crashed," the man said.

"I've never seen one like this."

The Sydney-based owner of the home was due to arrive on the scene late yesterday afternoon after being told that a car had crashed through the property.

Police are still tallying a damage bill.
