Vandals attack church over same-sex marriage message

14 Feb, 2012 11:06 AM
VANDALS attacked Wallsend Presbyterian Church last night in response to a message criticising same-sex marriage displayed on the building’s outside notice board.

The church on Nelson Street had updated its message board last week to read "Even tradies know you need both male and female joints to make a marriage".

The front of the 1867 building, which recently received a $12,000 makeover, was defaced with messages such as ‘‘sexuality is not a choice’’ and ‘‘love thy neighbour not hate gays’’.

Reverend Dr Ian Copland said the sign was a play on words and he wanted people to talk about the issue being raised in federal parliament.

He said he has no regrets despite the outcome.

‘‘This is not going to stop me,’’ he said.

Two bills to legalise same-sex marriage were introduced in Federal Parliament this week.

‘‘It’s obviously a reaction to the sign but I have no malice towards the vandals,’’ Rev Copland said.

‘‘It only takes one or two cowards you can’t blame the whole homosexual community. That would be wrong.’’

This is not the first time the church has been attacked regarding its stance on same-sex marriage.

The signboard was vandalised about six months ago when the reverend posted a similar message.

Whilst I am sorry that the church has been vandilised, I find the church's sign totally offensive and very aggresive. Other peoples lives are not the Reverend's to play with.

Is this the famous tolerance the gay community wants us to believe they have in spades..??..I want to know when they have their marriage equality, who's the next group to put their hands up for inclusion..Draw a line in the sand and make sure this doesn't happen and we don't have to worry about other 'groups' wanting marriage equality..

Is this one of the last Presbyterian churches after most joined in holy union to become the Uniting church?

Vandalism is wrong, but what did they expect?

It isn't 1867 any more.

Where is this "homosexual comunity" in Wallsend? This church attacks the whole comunity.

Is this a sign about couples smoking cannabis?

What a shame the Government has to only concentrate on "Gay" matters, when the country is in such a bad way.

This Government has divided the community so much by concentration on one subject.

If the church belief is not not going to be allowed by new Laws, you can understand their anguish. They should not be "made" to uphold a Law against their belief.

Are they outlawing religion?

I am not religious, but I see this as a big issue unfolding.

@James... What happened to free speech? or are you suggesting that it is ok to be a vandal if you are gay?
