Vatican halts bishops' joint church service

28 Feb, 2009 04:00 AM
THE Vatican has put a stop to a joint Pentecostal service planned by the Newcastle and Maitland Catholic and Anglican bishops.

The confirmation service was scheduled for May 31 at Christ Church Cathedral, and was promoted as a "very exciting and special" event.

Parishes encouraged church members to consider being confirmed on that day.

But Rome intervened, forcing its cancellation, citing the possibility of "confusing messages" being given to churchgoers.

It is unclear how the headquarters of the Catholic Church learned of the service, as no formal notification was given.

It is a blow for the two bishops, as well as Bishop David Walker of the Catholic Diocese of Broken Bay, who together signed an agreement last year called the Tri-Diocesan Covenant to work towards common goals.

It committed the dioceses to improve relations between the Catholic and Anglican communities.

The "request" was made by the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, which is the central governing body of the Catholic Church handling most affairs relating to official public worship.

In a joint statement, the Right Reverend Brian Farran, Anglican Bishop of Newcastle, and the Most Reverend Michael Malone, Catholic Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle, said the congregation had "expressed concern about a simultaneous celebration and the possibility of confusing messages being given to the people".

In the statement, Bishop Malone said he believed that since a similar celebration had been held in England in 1989, a precedent had been established, and he apologised to those who would have been involved.

Bishop Farran said he, too, was disappointed.

How many Catholic priests of the Maitland Diocese are now in jail or facing criminal charges yet not a word from Rome? However God forbid that Christians should pray together! When will Catholic bishops find the guts to stand up for what is right, especially what is right for the Catholic Church of Australia?

Of course the Catholic church would not like it. Its congregation may hear the truth. Ask a Catholic why they pray to Mary, the response will probably be, "it's what we're told to do". I tell them the Bible says the way to the Father is through the Son, so you should pray to Jesus. So much Catholic teaching is false doctrine. Praying to Mary will get you nowhere. Catholics need to know this. If in doubt check the Bible.

It seems the Vatican is busy lately in Australia. South Brisbane parish now the Bishop of Maitland. It seems "do gooders" write complaints to the Vatican and they are acted upon. Surely local Bishops have some decision making role! It seems our Bishops need to display strength in dealing with the Vatican. I am a member of the local church and resent being directed by some foreign busybody.

The two bishops should be congratulated for trying to unite people no matter what their religion. Did jesus ever say Catholics here and the rest over there ? Not likely! Jesus ,we are told, is a forgiving God and he preached to all comers. This nation and the world need unite in common aim for peace and division will never give us that. Small steps now will take us to bigger and better unity in the future. All good things start with the actions of a few, and in time others follow.

Looks like these two clerics were finally busted for their ecumenical love-in festival. It just shows that modern day clerics care less about Our Lord and more about being politically correct. Just tend to your own flocks and let God sort it out.

What's the use of joint services if Catholics and Protestants (not to mention other denominations) disagree on such fundamentals as papal authority, the real presence, women priests, a celibate clergy, aural confession, "filioque", etc? Without total submission to Rome there can never be real unity

My second attempt Is this another attempt to sideline Vatican II on "Ecumenism " or Jonn 17, 21 on the prayer of Jesus. What hope for joyful hope

Tracker, I agree - the bible also gives us rules about how to keep slaves. The current anti-slavery laws are ridiculous - the bible is the WORD!

The Church strongly encourages ecumenical services (praying together) and ecumenical cooperation, but a celebration of a valid Sacrament can never be combined with a celebration of an invalid simulated sacrament. "Confusing messages" is putting it mildly. Every bishop is surely well aware of this. The fact that some way-out wacko in England might have once tried on such a thing 20 years ago does not create a "precedent". Otherwise there would be a precedent for virtually everything. This is not a "blow" to the bishops nor to the Tri-Diocesan Covenant, which makes no mention or even hint of such an absurd idea. And it wasn't a “Pentecostal” service! Gee wasn’t it bad enough without claiming it’s a service of an extreme protestant denomination? And Tracker I suggest you check out the Bible, which strongly endorses praying to the Virgin Mary, not just blindly swallow what your self-appointed fundamentalist "pastor" told you to do, based on his personal unauthorised interpretation of a select few Bible verses.. Bill, you're perfectly free to join or invent something called "the local church" and to view the Pope as "some foreign busybody" but if you do, don't pretend to be a Catholic (which means "universal"). And yes sideline, Jesus was the very opposite of "inclusive" and politically correct. He warned us He would divide us all into categories.

And what of the Anglican converts, for whom receiving the sacrament of Confirmation is the very act of their rejection of Anglicanism and joining the Catholic Church?
